Trevoh Chalobah feels Chelsea could have got a result from our Carabao Cup tie against Manchester City on a different day, but knows we need to keep making progress as we deal with the fatigue and injuries caused by a frantic run of fixtures.
Graham Potter said he was pleased with his team’s performance, if not the result, after we were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Manchester City, creating the better of the chances but succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Chalobah also believes there were good signs from the Blues in Manchester, but knows there is a lot more work to do and patience needed as we continue to develop under Potter this season ahead of our next match against Newcastle United in the Premier League.
‘It’s about learning the way to play and it's going to take time, it's not going to happen overnight,’ he said. ‘We're going to get there, we showed a bit of confidence yesterday playing out from the back and had a lot of chances.
‘We could have come out with something in that game, but when you concede two against City it's always hard to come back and we've got to learn from this. It's a massive game on Saturday to make things right.
‘It's going to take time, day by day. We've got to make progress. After the game yesterday, we showed some glimpses of things we've been working on and we can take that into the next game.’
The defender also admitted he is feeling the effects of a busy run of games, with the Carabao Cup defeat at Man City being Chelsea’s 12th match in the six-and-a-half weeks since the start of October.
Chalobah has started the last 10 of those, playing every single minute for the Blues until he was substituted with around 20 minutes left at the Etihad Stadium.
‘It's been a tough one for myself,’ Chalobah continued. ‘I’ve played a lot of games and the body is feeling it but I’ve just got to push through. We’ve got one more game left and hopefully we can get a win, that's what we need at the moment.
‘Obviously we've had a few injuries so I’ve tried to keep myself in the best the shape in the best way possible to get selection. Obviously you have to get the recovery right, sleep, eat well and just get ready.’
The 23-year-old mentioned injuries and that certainly seems to be an area where Chelsea have been hit hard during this spell. As a centre-back, he also discussed the difficulties when you are used to playing alongside certain players, but then need to adjust to new combinations when they are ruled out, as has been the case with wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell recently.
‘Yeah, it's a really tough one. Both of our full-backs are out and they've been a massive part of our game. Losing them has been a hard one but we have to adapt and try to find a solution.
‘It's very hard. We're trying to find relationships, we're trying to find our identity, and we need everyone back to then try and find something. Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and when we get back after the World Cup all our players are back and we start fresh and go again.’
However, one consolation from those injuries is the opportunities it can give to other players, with 18-year-old Lewis Hall impressing on the left against City, making just his second senior appearance for the club and first of this season.
‘We saw a bit of him last season when he played and made his debut and he's a very good player, a powerful runner. We haven't trained a lot to see as much of him but yeah he did really well last night.
'As a young player it's the most important thing, to show the reason why you got given the chance and be confident. You have nothing to lose. He did really well. If he plays like that, then he's going to give an option to the manager.’
Chalobah, Hall and their team-mates only have the rest of this week to maintain their relentless schedule, though, as our trip to Newcastle on Saturday is our last game until Boxing Day, as club football takes a break for the World Cup.
‘It's going to be massive game,’ added Trevoh. ‘They're in good form at the moment and it's away from home so we need to make sure we rest and recover. It's a final for us really, we want to go into the World Cup break on a high with the three points.’
