Chelsea and the other 15 teams in the first knockout round of this season's Champions League have all now been confirmed. Here is all the information you need on when the draw for the last-16 is taking place and who the Blues could face in our next European match.
The UEFA Champions League group stage concluded this week, meaning we now know all 16 teams who have qualified for the competition's last-16. Chelsea's campaign ended on Wednesday, when a late equaliser by Zenit St Petersburg in a 3-3 draw in Russia, combined with Juventus' win over Malmo, resulted in us finishing second in Group H.
When is the round of 16 draw?
All eight ties in the first knockout round will be determined when the Champions League round of 16 draw takes place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday 13 December. The draw will start at 11am UK time and can be watched live on UEFA’s website and BT Sport.
Who else is in the last 16?
The eight group winners and eight runners up who qualify for the round of 16 have all now been decided. The teams who booked their place in this stage are:
Group winners (seeded): Ajax, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Liverpool, Lille, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid
Runners up (unseeded): Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Salzburg, Sporting Lisbon, Villarreal
Who can Chelsea be drawn against in the Champions League?
The Blues have one of the shortest lists of potential opponents. Having finished second in our group we are unseeded, but cannot face the winners of our own group or any of the other English teams, all three of which are seeded.
That leaves us with four possible last-16 opponents – Ajax, Bayern Munich, Lille and Real Madrid.
When is the round of 16?
The last-16 matchdays are spread out over two weeks for each leg. The seeded teams who won their group will be at home in the second leg.
The first legs will take place on 15, 16, 22 and 23 February 2022. The second legs are scheduled for 8, 9, 15 and 16 March 2022. All kick-offs will be at 8pm UK time.
Do away goals count double in the last 16?
No. In a change to the regulations from previous seasons, the away goals rule has been scrapped will no longer be in effect for two-legged knockout ties in the Champions League. That means if the aggregate scores are level after the usual 180 minutes of the two legs, the tie will be decided in extra-time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out, regardless of the number of goals each team scored at home and away.
