Niamh Charles has signed a new contract with Chelsea for three more years to keep her at the club until summer 2025.
The 23-year-old has transitioned from attacking wide player to full-back since joining Chelsea from Liverpool Women in the summer of 2020. A tenacious defender, she has already impressively helped the club clinch two Barclays FA Women’s Super League titles, two Vitality FA Cup’s and the Continental Cup while also making the final of the UEFA Champions League.
The number 21 has also continued to attract international recognition, representing England from the Under-17s where she finished third at the European Championships for that age group, and also reached the quarter-finals at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Charles received her first call-up to the Lionesses in the summer of 2020 at the same time as joining Chelsea and has gone on to feature regularly for her country, most recently lifting the Arnold Clark Cup this year.
Upon signing her extension, Charles commented: ‘I’m really proud to have signed a new contract with Chelsea and to continue representing the badge with pride.
‘The past two years have been incredible and I’m excited to continue developing both as an individual and with the team. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in the next few years.
‘I can’t thank the fans enough for the support they’ve shown me and the team and we’re all excited to see them again at Kingsmeadow next week.’
General manager Paul Green added: ‘We are delighted for Niamh to extend her contract with the club.
‘She has been developing well over the last couple of years and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve and develop over the next three years.’
Charles is currently in the US with the squad competing in the Women’s International Champions Cup and will return next week ahead of our friendly against Spurs on Sunday 28 August. Kick-off is 2pm and tickets are still available to be purchased here.
