AC Milan 1-1 Chelsea, Chelsea won on coin toss – March 1966

Our Fairs Cup last-16 tie against AC Milan in 1966 needed three games and a coin toss to separate the sides. With both legs ending 2-1 to the hosts, a deciding fixture was required.

Captain Ron Harris lost the coin toss for the venue, and in the San Siro it finished 1-1, so another heads or tails call was required to determine the winner. Chopper guessed correctly!

Jeunesse Hautcharage 0-8 Chelsea – September 1971

The Blues began the defence of our Cup Winners’ Cup crown in style, racking up our biggest European away victory against part-time Luxembourg outfit.

Peters Osgood and Houseman netted three and two goals respectively, with John Hollins, Tommy Baldwin and David Webb getting in on the act during an historic evening.

Austria Vienna 1-1 Chelsea – November 1994

The vital away goal in this two-legged Cup Winners’ Cup tie was a thing of beauty, sending the 7000-strong travelling Chelsea support into raptures.

From an Austria Vienna corner, John Spencer collected the loose ball on the edge of our own box and legged it upfield unchallenged, before rounding the keeper and firing home. Cult hero status was assured!

Tromso 3-2 Chelsea – October 1997

This Cup Winners’ Cup second round first-leg trip inside the Arctic Circle will never be forgotten because of the snowfall that enveloped the pitch for much of the game.

Play was halted twice so the lines could be cleared as the hosts dealt with the testing conditions the better. Thankfully, Gianluca Vialli balletically netted two late away goals, and we made no mistake in the second leg back at the Bridge, winning 7-1.

Galatasaray 0-5 Chelsea – October 1999

‘Welcome to Hell’ was the famous banner that greeted the Chelsea players on their arrival in Istanbul, but the outcome proved rather heavenly as the Blues ran riot in the Turkish capital.

Tore Andre Flo put us 2-0 up with a pair of cute finishes, with Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Wise and Gabriele Ambrosetti adding gloss to an eye-catching win that silenced the home support.

Wise’s equaliser in front of thousands of Chelsea fans in the San Siro a week later is immortal, evidenced by the song in its honour still being sung today.

On our first Champions League visit to one of the truly great European grounds against a team full of stars, Gianluca Vialli’s Blues were more than a match for our illustrious opponents and deservedly left with a share of the spoils thanks to the skipper’s moment of magic.

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea – April 2004

A bit closer to home but nonetheless still an unforgettable away day. Coming from behind to beat the champions-elect on their own patch was not expected by many, but second-half goals from Frank Lampard and Wayne Bridge ensured we did just that to secure one of our most iconic European away victories.

It had been nearly six years since we last beat our London rivals. The second leg of a Champions League quarter-final was a good time to end that run!

Liverpool 1-3 Chelsea, April 2009

Liverpool versus Chelsea emerged as one of the great English and European rivalries in the 2000s. They were usually tight and tense games, but a Champions League quarter-final tie in 2009 bucked the trend.

After Fernando Torres opened the scoring at Anfield, an unlikely headed brace from Branislav Ivanovic put us in front, a lead Didier Drogba added to as Guus Hiddink’s Blues showcased their attacking potential in some style.

Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea, April 2012

Somehow, the ten men of Chelsea fought back from two goals down against arguably the greatest club side of all time to draw 2-2 and book our place in the Champions League final.

The goals were legendary, too. First a Ramires chip out of nothing and then Fernando Torres’s breakaway equaliser in the 90th minute. This is a strong contender for our most memorable European away game ever!

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Chelsea, September 2017

Back in the Champions League after a year out, Chelsea signalled our intent with a dramatic victory at Atletico Madrid, playing their first European game at their new stadium.

Alvaro Morata cancelled out Antoine Griezmann’s spot-kick on the hour, before Michy Batshuayi sent the travelling hordes wild with a 94th-minute winner the Blues thoroughly deserved.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Chelsea Women, October 2017

Emma Hayes’ Blues upset the odds to advance past Bayern Munich on away goals in this Champions League last-32 tie.

It was Fran Kirby’s breakaway goal that proved the difference despite Bayern fighting back to win on the night, earning Chelsea a seismic aggregate victory that epitomised the forward direction the club was moving in.

Lyon 0-1 Chelsea Women, March 2023

Guro Reiten netted the only goal of an impressive quarter-final first-leg victory away to French giants Lyon, who had knocked us out of the Champions League in the semis four years prior.

Reiten’s fine finish was supplemented by a professional away performance that laid the grounds for a fantastic aggregate success which made Europe stand up and take notice.
