We mark the 14th day of December by chatting to our No.14 Nathalie Bjorn who is approaching a year to the day since she joined Chelsea.

The Swedish defender, who will be hoping to be in action for the Blues this afternoon in our final Women’s Super League match of the year against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, made the move to London on January 10 2024.

When she swapped the blue of Everton for the blue of Chelsea, it did not take long for Bjorn to make a mark on her new club.

She made her debut only four days after putting pen to paper and soon cemented her place as a regular in the team. The 27-year-old has continued her fine form this term, having played in all but two of our WSL matches thus far under head coach Sonia Bompastor.

To have played an important part upon her introduction to the team, Bjorn says, helped her settle in from the very beginning. Now, Chelsea undoubtedly feels like home.

‘The time has gone really fast,’ Bjorn told us as she reflected on her first year in London. ‘It feels like I have been here longer than a year, but at the same time, it also feels like I just came yesterday.

‘I’ve really enjoyed playing here for Chelsea. Firstly under Emma (Hayes) and now with Sonia, and just being surrounded by top athletes. That’s helped me take a big step in my own personal development.

‘I settled in so quickly because everyone was so welcoming and I quickly got to play a lot of games, so I got in my rhythm quickly. I think that’s why it feels like I’ve been here longer than a year.

‘One of the younger players recently asked me how long I have been here and I said just since January. I don’t think they believed me, they were like: 'Really?' I haven’t been here that long, but it feels like I have.

‘I probably look back and think it’s maybe one of the best years I have had in my career. I’m very proud of myself for the step I took and the chance I was given. I feel like I'm moving in the right direction and somewhere really good.’

When Bjorn joined Chelsea, she had already racked up more than 300 senior appearances during spells in her native Sweden and then Merseyside. The games she has played since, the defender believes, have shaped her into an even better player.

‘This is a tough environment at Chelsea,’ Bjorn said. ‘You need to be ready for every single session because there is more than one top-class player in every position.

‘I have wanted to be more consistent and improve the standard of my game. Even my lowest standard is much higher than it was before, I would say. I’ve learnt to trust myself more and grow as the player I am.

‘It’s been everything I could ever dream of. You have everything you need to become as good as you want to be. That’s amazing. Of course, you have to put the effort in too, but it does make it easier when you have all the help you need to succeed as an individual and as a team.

'There is no place I’d rather be than here at Chelsea.’

Bjorn's first year at the club yielded a WSL trophy and lifting silverware is naturally one of her highlights to date. But, getting to represent Chelsea week in and week out is as special an occasion as any to the defender.

‘The title, of course, but I would honestly say every game in a Chelsea shirt,’ Bjorn said about her best bits in Blue. ‘Being able to play in front of our fans at both Kingsmeadow - which is a great atmosphere - and Stamford Bridge is amazing. It’s just an honour to wear the shirt.’
