The first piece of silverware under Sonia Bompastor has been secured as Chelsea claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Manchester City to win the 2025 League Cup final.

Mayra Ramirez broke the deadlock at Pride Park in the eighth minute and the Blues defended excellently for the remainder of the opening period under sustained City pressure.

That eventually paid off as Aoba Fujino struck shortly after the hour mark, but Chelsea responded and forced an own goal from Yui Hasegawa with 13 minutes to play.

City attempted to mount a late fight back but our defence – marshalled by the sponsor's Player of the Match, Millie Bright – stayed resolute and ensured that we secured the League Cup for the first time in four years.

'We are really happy for sure,' said Bompastor. 'You know when you're in a final, the main thing is always to win. The game was not easy today, but we're very happy with the win. [It is the] first trophy in the season, so it's always important.

'I just told my players it's really important that today, we are about to turn the words into actions. We worked so hard every day from the beginning of the season and today was huge positivity from the players to perform and win a title.

'Really happy with that. I think it's really deserved for all of the work we have been doing.'
