In our weekly round-up of the action involving Chelsea players on loan, there was a first Premier League start and some eye-catching derby victories as top-flight football concluded ahead of the winter World Cup...

Levi Colwill made his first appearance for Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi, who replaced Graham Potter in early September, as they secured a memorable Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal. The Gunners had only lost twice in their last 19 matches in all competitions, but Brighton made that three in 20 despite going behind at the Emirates Stadium, equalising from the penalty spot before two second-half goals gave them a 3-1 win.

Colwill retained his place in the side to make his full Premier League debut as they hosted Aston Villa in that competition on Sunday, but couldn’t mark the occasion with another win. The Seagulls took the lead with their fastest-ever top-flight goal, Alexis Mac Allister finding the net after just 49 seconds, but Villa fought back to win 2-1 with a pair of Danny Ings strikes either side of half-time.

Over in Italy, Ethan Ampadu was in impressive form during an important week for Spezia in Serie A, as they took four points from two games – having only managed one from their previous six league fixtures – to move six-points clear of the relegation zone.

They survived an early scare at home against Udinese in midweek, when the visitors had a goal ruled out by VAR, before Ampadu’s glorious cross-field pass allowed Arkadiusz Reca to give Spezia the lead from close range. The Welshman was then unlucky not to get on the score sheet himself, as his volley hit the crossbar and then he had another effort saved from the resulting corner, only to see Udinese counter immediately to equalise and make it a 1-1 draw.

Spezia did get the win when they travelled to Hellas Verona at the weekend, but it looked unlikely in the first half when, trailing 1-0, the game was paused for a long period after the visitors' Polish goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski suffered a shocking injury in an accidental collision, ruling him out of the World Cup and the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

It was Spezia who were the better side after play resumed, though, with Ampadu heavily involved in a slick passing move for M’Bala Nzola to equalise, before the striker headed in another to make it a 2-1 victory, holding up their injured goalkeeper’s shirt as he celebrated.

Callum Hudson-Odoi helped Bayer Leverkusen come from behind to earn local bragging rights by beating Cologne 2-1 in the Rhine derby. Leverkusen were the away side in this Bundesliga meeting and went a goal down in the first half. It momentarily looked like Hudson-Odoi had set up an equaliser with a pinpoint free-kick on the brink of half-time, only for Edmond Tapsoba to head narrowly wide, but two goals in five second-half minutes did eventually give the visitors just their second away win of the season.

Back in England, Ian Maatsen helped Burnley return to the top of the Championship table by thrashing local rivals Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in their biggest east Lancashire derby win since 1965. It was the first meeting of the two sides in over six years and Blackburn did a good job of frustrating the home side, making it goalless at the break. Three second-half goals changed that, though, sending the home fans into wild celebration and Burnley back three-points clear in first place.

Nathan Baxter was involved in a week of high drama for Hull City. Their first goal under new manager Liam Rosenior arrived early on away at Cardiff City last Tuesday, but a deflected Baxter clearance helped Cardiff equalise before the home side took the lead. There was another turnaround to come, though, as two goals in three minutes gave Hull a 3-2 win, their first victory under Rosenior.

Hull went ahead early again in Rosenior’s first home game, against a Reading side featuring their own Chelsea loanee in Baba Rahman, but this time the Tigers were on the receiving end of a late turnaround, conceding an equaliser from a corner before a flicked-on cross went in off a defender for a 94th-minute own goal, giving Reading a 2-1 win.

The Royals had been well beaten by a rejuvenated Watford in mid-week, the 2-0 scoreline being the least the Hornets deserved, but moved into the top half of the table with victory over Hull, their first away from home in any competition since September. That ensures Baba heads off to Qatar on a high, having been named in Ghana’s 26-man World Cup squad on Monday morning.

Jamie Cumming and Henry Lawrence were both involved throughout for MK Dons, the latter in a more advanced position was a winger, as they booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a straightforward 2-0 home win over fellow League One side Morecambe.

However, they couldn’t carry that form into the league, despite taking the lead at home against Derby County shortly before half-time. That advantage lasted just two minutes as a pair of set-pieces turned the game around for Derby before they added another to make the final score 3-1 to the visitors.

Lucas Bergstrom and Peterborough United were on the receiving end of a late turnaround. Bergstrom had produced a brilliant save to deny Exeter City in the first half, but couldn’t prevent them taking the lead from the resulting corner. Peterborough fought back to then impressively take the lead with nine minutes remaining, but a late equaliser and injury-time winner condemned the Posh to a 3-2 defeat.

Bryan Fiabema was a late substitute in Forest Green Rovers’ 2-0 defeat at home against Wycombe Wanderers. In League Two, Jayden Wareham played the final few minutes of Leyton Orient’s surprise loss by the same scoreline at Wimbledon, but they remain top of the table.
