While most people had their attention on Qatar and the World Cup final, closer to home there were plenty of Chelsea loanees in action in the English Football League, with some eye-catching wins but disappointing news for one youngster...

Ian Maatsen helped Burnley extend their lead at the top of the Championship table to six points, but they had to do it the hard way in a dramatic match with Middlesbrough. The Clarets went behind shortly after half-time, but hit back with three second-half goals and held on for a 3-1 win, despite being reduced to 10 men late on and Boro missing a penalty in the final minute.

Tino Anjorin was not involved in Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 defeat to Watford, after the Championship club confirmed last week he would need surgery on a serious ankle injury he suffered in training, leaving the remainder of his season in jeopardy after scoring twice in nine appearances for the Terriers so far.

'We're really devastated for him,' said manager Mark Fotheringham.

‘We’re going to assess it now with Chelsea and support him as much as we can with the medical staff. Leigh Bromby [Huddersfield director of football] will obviously have dialogue with Chelsea to find a solution to what we're going to do next.

‘But first and foremost we’re just concerned about Tino’s welfare because we know he’s going to be mentally down following that injury. He’s a player we think the world of, he’s well respected and liked in the group and he’s a fans’ favourite.’

Harvey Vale came off the bench to make his second appearance of the season for Hull City in an action-packed draw with Sunderland. The Black Cats were leading and had already lost two players to injury and one to a red card, while Hull had missed a penalty, before Vale was introduced in the 81st minute. The young forward wasn’t behind for long, though, as less than a minute after he came on the Tigers found an equaliser, ending their run of four consecutive home defeats.

Baba Rahman was substituted by Reading with 10 minutes remaining of their visit to Birmingham City on Friday evening and the Hoops 3-0 down, meaning he missed their late fightback to 3-2, but they were unable to complete an incredible comeback to grab a point.

Jamie Cumming helped managerless MK Dons bounce back to winning ways with a crucial win at Portsmouth. Henry Lawrence had also been in the Dons’ starting line-up when interim boss Dean Lewington began his tenure with a 4-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers in the Football League Trophy, which ended their participation in that competition, but things were much improved in his first League One fixture in the dugout.

They travelled to Portsmouth, who had not lost at home since January, looking to end their own run of five league games without a win. They rode their luck early on, as Cumming twice produced good saves to keep the game scoreless before Pompey struck the crossbar with a free-kick. However, a goal from a cross in each half gave MK Dons a crucial away victory, moving them within three points of safety in the relegation fight.

Bryan Fiabema played the first hour of Forest Green Rovers’ heavy League One defeat away at Derby County, with his side on the receiving end of a 4-0 loss, and the Norwegian will be disappointed after heading a decent chance for a way back into the game over the crossbar from close range, shortly after Derby’s second goal.
