It has been a quiet few weeks for those Chelsea players out on loan, with the top leagues in England and across Europe paused for the World Cup, though some of our youngsters have enjoyed knockout success amid the reduced schedule.
Joining Mark Robinson’s Chelsea Under-21s side in the last-16 of the Papa Johns Trophy are Jamie Cumming and Henry Lawrence with MK Dons. The former was between the posts as the Buckinghamshire side beat Newport County 3-1 to advance to the next stage, where they will take on Bristol Rovers.
The young Blues have been drawn to face Cheltenham Town following a 4-2 victory over Peterborough United with Malik Mothersille, Cesare Casadei and Ben Elliott on the scoresheet up against Lucas Bergstrom in goal for the Posh.
The Finland youth international has been an ever-present in recent weeks for Grant McCann’s side, who currently sit fourth in League One but were beaten 3-1 by Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup second round this weekend.
Cumming has also played every match for MK Dons, who are at the other end of the table in 21st position in the English third tier, while Lawrence has been involved in four of their past five matches featuring mostly as a wing-back.
Liam Manning’s men were knocked out of the FA Cup with a 3-2 loss to Portsmouth but are among the remaining 16 teams in the Carabao Cup ahead of a home tie against Leicester City next month.
Elsewhere, strikers Bryan Fiabema and Jayden Wareham have featured less frequently for Forest Green Rovers and Leyton Orient respectively, though the former does have the FA Cup third round draw on Monday evening to look forward to after beating Alvechurch at the weekend.
Our Under-21s have also been in action in recent days as they beat Dulwich Hamlet 6-3 in a friendly on Saturday afternoon with Casadei notching a hat-trick, Mason Burstow bagging a brace and Silko Thomas also on the scoresheet. The young Blues take on Cheltenham for a place in the Papa Johns Trophy quarter-finals in the week commencing Monday 12 December.
