In our regular round-up of the action involving Chelsea players away on loan, the Championship returned following their World Cup break, with one Blue getting back in action in style.
Left-back Ian Maatsen found the net for Burnley for the second time this season as they restored their three-point advantage at the top of the Championship table with a comprehensive 3-0 victory away at Queens Park Rangers. The Clarets picked up where they had left off before the World Cup break to continue their impressive form with an eighth win from their last 10 games.
Burnley dominated throughout in a confident performance and Maatsen found the net to score their second in first-half injury time. The Dutch defender reacted quickest in the box when the full-back on the opposite flank, Vitinha, had his shot saved by goalkeeper Seny Dieng, producing a composed finish for his first goal since netting the winner on his debut against Huddersfield Town on the opening day of the season.
Baba Rahman started in midfield for Reading as they hosted Coventry City just eight days after representing Ghana in their last group game at the World Cup, where he featured in all three of his country’s matches. It was a happy return, though, as the Hoops ended Coventry’s run of four consecutive wins with a 1-0 victory. The solitary goal arrived from a second-half corner and was the first the Sky Blues had conceded in nearly three months, with the win taking Reading within one point of the play-off places.
Last week, Jamie Cumming was in goal for MK Dons in a high-pressure relegation clash in League One. The points were shared with Burton Albion, with Cumming unable to prevent the visitors opening the scoring from the spot after former Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran had given away a penalty, but a late equaliser by MK prevented them dropping below their opponents to the bottom of the table.
It proved to be just a delay though, as they were leapfrogged by Burton this week, although MK remain ahead of Morecambe on goal difference. Cumming retained his place as they took the lead early in the second half at home against Fleetwood Town, but was beaten by a fine equaliser before the visitors found a winner in the 90th minute. Fellow Chelsea loanee Henry Lawrence came on for the Dons shortly after Fleetwood had equalised.
There was a difficult day for a goalkeeper at the other end of the League One table, as promotion contenders Peterborough United and Barnsley went head-to-head. Lucas Bergstrom could do nothing to stop Barnsley scoring a brilliant opener, but after the Posh had equalised the Finnish keeper will be disappointed after failing to gather a long-range effort in the second half, allowing the visitors to win 2-1 and leapfrog Peterborough in the table.
Bergstrom was powerless to prevent Peterborough suffering another defeat, though, when they travelled to top-of-the-table Ipswich Town in an entertaining and even fixture. It was Ipswich who came out on top 2-1, meaning Peterborough have now lost four in a row after their flying start to the season, with only goal difference still keeping them in the play-off places.
