Bruno’s Blues and odds on Joao
Well, it’s been anything but a quiet 24 hours or so. With the news on Sunday evening emerging that Graham Potter had left Chelsea, we now head into tonight’s Premier League clash with Liverpool under the tutelage of interim head coach, Bruno Saltor.
As you might have expected, I haven’t been able to keep as close an eye on training as usual. So there may be changes to the line-up when Bruno selects his first side.
One player who you’d imagine will keep his place is Joao Felix and he might be a good bet for our first goalscorer, given his recent form and the history he has against Liverpool.
He made an assist last season against Jurgen Klopp’s side if I remember correctly, albeit in the red and white of Atleti, and he’d be my pick for Chelsea’s first goalscorer tonight. Prove me right, Joao!
Late goals to come?
Did you know, the majority of Chelsea’s goals this season have come in the last 15 minutes of matches?
I know, surprised me as well. Yet having looked through the data, it is in fact correct. Of the 29 goals we’ve notched this season, eight of them have come in the final 15 minutes of games.
What’s more interesting, Liverpool have netted 10 goals during that period of games while both sides having conceded five each. A sign not to leave early and, potentially, to back a late first goalscorer?
Go for 1-0!
The subject of ‘history’ often comes up whenever Chelsea play Liverpool and looking at the recent past in these fixtures, I’ve spotted a reason to beware of predicting success for the Reds at Stamford Bridge on this occasion.
The historical barrier against a Liverpool win is that the Anfield outfit have never paid us five visits in a row in the league without a defeat and you’ve guessed it, they did not lose in their previous four Premier League matches at the Bridge. Two of those were draws.
So many seasons of contests between the clubs show that the Blues are now due a win. The next question is by what sort of score margin. All recent meetings have shown these two teams are well-matched, with the wild card of new signings to consider.
In the 61 Premier League games between Chelsea and Liverpool so far, whenever one of the sides has been able to win, the most common scoreline has been a 1-0 victory to the Blues.
Remember, there’s another game to think about at the weekend, so bear that in mind tonight. In any case, happy predicting!
