With most European seasons now a third of the way through, we check up on how the Chelsea players out on loan have been doing since the last international break in October.
We begin abroad, with some more impressive performances from our French and Argentinian contingent, before looking through the various leagues back home in England…
Djordje Petrovic, Andrey Santos, Caleb Wiley – Strasbourg
The last month or so has been more difficult for Strasbourg following an excellent start to their campaign in the French top flight, but Chelsea loan duo Djordje Petrovic and Andrey Santos have continued to impress despite losing three of their four Ligue 1 fixtures since the last international break.
Both played their part in the solitary victory, though, as Strasbourg beat Nantes 3-1. Petrovic was called upon on a number of occasions to ensure the visitors scored just once from their seven shots on target, but it was Santos who really caught the eye.
The Brazilian midfielder netted a brace to fire Strasbourg into a 2-0 lead inside an hour, continuing his impressive form to make it five league goals so far for the season, and also picked up the club's Player of the Month for October.
The third Chelsea loanee at Strasbourg, Caleb Wiley, continues to work towards a full comeback from knee injury, making short substitute appearances in the last two Ligue 1 fixtures, before playing the full 90 minutes of a 1-0 win for Strasbourg’s ‘B’ team in the fifth tier of French football.
Aaron Anselmino – Boca Juniors
Aaron Anselmino has continued to be a key member of Boca’s defence this season and started all but one of their league games since the last break, setting up a goal against Godoy Cruz in the first of back-to-back wins going into the current pause in club action.
However, it was in the Copa Argentina where his best moment came, heading in an early opener for Boca to score his second goal of the season. They needed a penalty shootout to complete the job, but eventually booked their place in the semi-finals with victory over Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
Anselmino may have to miss the semi-final though after picking up a hamstring injury.
David Fofana – Goztepe
After scoring his first goal in the Turkish top flight in Goztepe’s last match before the October international break, David Fofana has begun to establish himself in the starting line-up, being named in the side from kick-off for their last three games.
That has helped Goztepe maintain their 100 per cent home record this season, with further wins over Trabzonspor and Konyaspor.
Trevoh Chalobah – Crystal Palace
Trevoh Chalobah has featured in every minute in all five games across all competitions for Crystal Palace since the last international break, becoming a key part of Oliver Glasner’s back-three system at Selhurst Park.
In addition to a memorable clean sheet in a 1-0 London derby win over Tottenham Hotspur and progressing to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa, Chalobah also netted his first goal for Palace, opening the scoring in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Kepa Arrizabalaga – Bournemouth
Despite a slight injury issue, which saw him miss two games as what manager Andoni Iraola called ‘a small precaution’, Kepa Arrizabalaga has continued to assert himself as Bournemouth’s first-choice between the posts.
He started both of the Cherries’ other two Premier League matches, playing a crucial role in an important victory in the first. Keeping a clean sheet against Arsenal, he denied Gabriel Martinelli at close range shortly before Bournemouth opened the scoring at the other end, in the turning point of a 2-0 victory.
He couldn’t prevent Bournemouth suffering a 3-2 defeat to Brentford last time out, though, as the Bees twice came from behind and the Cherries dropped points with Kepa in their team for only the third time this season.
Raheem Sterling – Arsenal
Raheem Sterling has made a further three appearances for the Gunners across three different competitions.
That started in the Premier League, when he came off the bench in their 2-0 loss to Bournemouth, but he was more successful when introduced for the final 20 minutes of a Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk, helping the side hold on for a 1-0 win.
Sterling then featured for the full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup, playing his part as Arsenal comfortably saw off Preston North End 3-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Lesley Ugochukwu - Southampton
Lesley Ugochukwu came off the bench in back-to-back Premier League games, helping Southampton secure their first win of the season in that competition by beating Everton 1-0, before Wolves achieved the same feat against the Saints the following week.
He also featured throughout in the Carabao Cup, when Southampton booked their place in the quarter-finals in dramatic style thanks to an 88th-minute winner to beat Stoke City 3-2, having earlier surrendered a two-goal lead.
Armando Broja – Everton
Armando Broja is still awaiting his Everton debut due to injury, although the Toffees are hopeful he could appear in the near future after he stepped up his return to partial training during the international break.
Alfie Gilchrist – Sheffield United
Alfie Gilchrist has continued to play a key role for Sheffield United as they rose to second place in the Championship table, starting all but one of their league matches since the October international break.
That has helped them go on a run of four consecutive wins, starting with a 2-0 victory over Stoke – when Gilchrist set up the opening goal by fizzing a low ball into the box – and concluding with a narrow but morale-boosting 1-0 triumph over local rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City Derby.
Bashir Humphreys – Burnley
Bashir Humphreys has made five league appearances for Burnley since the October break, three of them from the start, as the Clarets continue to push for an immediate return to the top flight.
Featuring mainly at left-back in the Championship during that period, he helped them to wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City, but also suffered his first two defeats with Burnley.
A narrow 1-0 loss away at Millwall was followed by a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Premier League opposition, with 2-0 defeat to Wolves.
It has also been a good couple of weeks for Humphreys as he played the full 90 minutes in both of England Under-21s, games, his first outings at U21 level for a year.
Gaga Slonina – Barnsley
After helping high-flying Barnsley to four points from two games in the Championship – a 2-1 win at Blackpool and 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic – Gaga Slonina was left out of the team for the win at Shrewsbury Town and it has since been confirmed the goalkeeper will be out of action for around six weeks with a finger injury.
Teddy Sharman-Lowe – Doncaster Rovers
Teddy Sharman-Lowe has continued to cement his place as Doncaster Rovers’ first-choice goalkeeper, playing every minute in League One and the FA Cup.
He has helped Rovers to an impressive run of just one defeat in their last eight league matches, which includes four victories, most recently over Swindon Town and Bradford City, propelling them into second place in the table.
That was joined by a clean sheet for the keeper in knockout competition, as he helped Doncaster into the second round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win away at Barrow.
Ronnie Stutter, Dylan Williams – Burton Albion
Dylan Williams played the first half of the defeat at Bolton Wanderers and came off the bench late on in another loss to Wycombe Wanderers, but like Ronnie Stutter, he has not featured in League One since the departure of former Chelsea Under-21s head coach Mark Robinson.
However, Williams did play the full 90 minutes of Burton’s 1-0 FA Cup first round win over Scarborough Athletic, their maiden victory in any competition against senior opposition this season, and then was the star of the show when they got another.
After Burton had gone behind early on at Northampton Town in the EFL Trophy, Williams set up an equaliser ten minutes later before scoring his first Burton goal to give them the lead just after the half-hour mark, setting the Brewers on their way to a 5-2 victory.
Leo Castledine – Shrewsbury Town
This period started well for Leo Castledine and Shrewsbury Town, as they recorded their second league win of the season – and their first away from home – by edging an exciting match against Crawley Town. After going 2-1 behind after an hour, a flurry of late goals saw Shrewsbury eventually triumph 5-3.
Castledine has continued to feature in every league game since, but it has been tough going, four consecutive defeats leaving them bottom of the League One standings, as well as exiting the FA Cup in the first round.
Eddie Beach – Crawley Town
Goalkeeper Eddie Beach remains sidelined for League One Crawley due to injury, and has not been involved in matches since the last international break.
Ted Curd – Hampton & Richmond
In the National League South, Ted Curd has now helped Hampton & Richmond record three consecutive victories in their best run of the season so far.
That includes back-to-back clean sheets when they beat Chippenham Town 2-0 and Hemel Hempstead Town 4-0 in their last two matches, as they edge towards the top half of the table.
Luke Campbell – Hendon
Luke Campbell has started all nine games in goal during this busy period for the Isthmian League Premier Division side.
Most recently, he kept back-to-back clean sheets in a 3-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet and goalless draw with Lewes, keeping Hendon in touch with the promotion race.
