Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle says the surprise Women’s Super League defeat against Reading could serve as a well-timed warning for Thursday’s crucial final Champions League group game with Wolfsburg.
A draw in Germany will ensure we progress into the quarter-finals, but defeat could see us finish third and miss out.
Wales captain Ingle, who was rested for the frustrating 1-0 loss to The Royals, said dealing with the inevitable lows is part of being a successful side.
‘As a squad we’re really competitive,’ said Ingle, 30. ‘We want to win every game we can, but we’re not too good to lose as a team.
‘This will probably help us in the long run, to give us a little kick that we potentially needed to come back flying on Thursday night.’
Ingle said the relentless nature of the recent schedule had played a part in the defeat at Reading which means we are now four points behind leaders Arsenal.
She said beating the Gunners to win the FA Cup for the third time in our history took a lot out of us.
‘The FA Cup final is always an emotional day, whether you win or lose, you put everything into it,’ she said. ‘To then play three games in six days is tough for any team. I think those games just came along in such quick succession that it was a bit of tiredness and fatigue at the weekend.’
However, Ingle said two massive games before Christmas can put us in a great place.
‘We need a big result on Thursday in the Champions League to qualify in that and then it’s back to the league for another important match [against West Ham at Kingsmeadow on Sunday]. We’re chasing Arsenal and we need to get those three points before the break.’
Retaining our league title would be a huge achievement but Ingle cannot help thinking about going one better than last season and helping us become European champions for the first time.
‘We want to win and we’re at a winning club. The main one for me, and most of the team, is the Champions League,’ she said.
‘After reaching the final, which was an amazing achievement to finally get there for the first time, we want to get there again and lift the trophy.’
