Noni Madueke and Levi Colwill were part of the England Under-21s side that made it through to the quarter-finals of the European Championship with a game to spare.

Having won their opening match 2-0 against Czechia, the Young Lions followed it up on Sunday with a very comfortable victory by the same scoreline over Israel.

The Chelsea pair both started and Madueke had the ball in the net with only three minutes played but there was an offside flag up against Emile Smith Rowe. However, England did not have to wait too much longer for a lead, Anthony Gordon heading in a Morgan Gibbs-White cross with quarter-of-an-hour played.

On a hot night in the Georgian city of Kutaisi, the rest of the first half passed largely without incident. Colwill and his fellow defenders had a quiet time with England in control and Israel failing to mount a sustained attack. Some rare sloppiness from Lee Carsley’s side allowed their opponents a couple of sights at goal just before half-time but a header went wide and a free-kick was saved.

Madueke, playing on the right of a front three, shot wide early in the second half. He was substituted with an hour of the game played.

Colwill was able join in with England’s passing moves inside the Israeli half, and the lead was doubled on 68 minutes when Smith Rowe found the net with a low shot from the edge of the area.

The Young Lions complete their group stage on Wednesday when they play Germany. With Czechia beating the Germans 2-1 in their second game, England are already guaranteed top spot in the group.

Elsewhere, Dujuan Richards, whose signing for Chelsea was announced yesterday, was an unused sub in Jamaica’s opening game at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. His side drew 1-1 with the United States in Chicago. Christian Pulisic is not with the US squad for this tournament.
