Our review of the last campaign continues with a look at our most frequent matches - our participation in the 20/21 Premier League…
In common with other competitions, it was a Premier League season with a difference - with the latest start following the shortest close season and a crowded fixture schedule. What should have been the second year with a winter break was scrapped as a consequence and of course there was a lack of supporters in the stadiums apart from two games in December and then two at the end, one home and one away when small crowds were allowed.
The pandemic disruption was a continuation of how the previous season had concluded, and for Chelsea there were similarities between both, with fourth place secured on the final day although in 2020/21 we needed another result to go our way due to defeat in our last game.
Third place in the table was as high as we reached during the campaign with 10th the lowest, after the second game and then after the 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Thomas Tuchel's first game in charge. We were ninth at the time of Frank Lampard's departure.
The rise was rapid after that Wolves game, and four games later, with a win at home to Newcastle, we moved up to fourth and would not drop below fifth for the rest of the season.
Assessing Chelsea's highest appearance makers in the league during the season, when it comes to starting games, three new signings were sandwiched between by two Academy products who had established themselves the season before.
Goals and shots
Top for shots on target was Timo, with 32 over the course of the league campaign, followed by Mount with 27 and Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic with 16 apiece. Mount had the most off-target attempts, 32, and the most shots blocked, 24.
