England’s Under-17 World Cup group stage campaign concluded with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brazil in which three Chelsea youngsters played.
The Young Lions had already secured their safe passage to the last 16 courtesy of a big win over New Caledonia and then a very late one against Iran earlier this week.
Josh Acheampong started again at right-back. Harrison Murray-Campbell (pictured top), with one sub appearance to his name before today, lined up alongside him in defence, while Michael Golding was selected in the midfield trio.
Ishe Samuels-Smith dropped to the bench and Reiss Denny, a scorer in England’s first two games, was not in the matchday squad.
Acheampong set up the first good chance of the game when his right-wing cross was acrobatically volleyed against the crossbar by Matty Warhurst.
At the other end, Murray-Campbell was in the right place at the right time to clear a dinked Pedro Lima finish off the line. Warhurst saw a header superbly saved and Brazil hit a post before the South Americans took the lead shortly before half-time through a volley from Kaua Elias.
It was an advantage they doubled on 54 minutes when Da Mata headed in from close range. England were handed a lifeline a quarter-of-an-hour later when Joel Ndala was fouled inside the box, a penalty eventually awarded following a lengthy VAR review. Ndala converted the penalty himself.
That delay and several stoppages for treatment contributed to 15 minutes of added time, but there was to be no England equaliser so 2-1 it finished.
England finish top of Group C on goal difference and will play a third-placed team in the round of 16 in Jakarta on Wednesday.
