Chelsea form

Chelsea have won seven of our last nine Champions League home games, with the exceptions being a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in last season's quarter-final and a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg in this season's group stage.

Chelsea are looking to win three consecutive round of 16 home games in the Champions League for the first time since 2006/07 to 2008/09.

The Blues have won nine of the 17 European ties in which we had a first-leg deficit to overturn at Stamford Bridge, but lost the most recent, against Paris Saint-Germain at this stage of the 2015/16 Champions League (1-2 away, 1-2 home). We have won all four of the ties in which we lost the away first leg 1-0, most recently against Steaua Bucharest in the round of 16 of our victorious Europa League campaign in 2012/13 (3-1 home). In all four cases, we won the second leg by a two-goal margin.


Chelsea's Champions League record in the round of 16 is 10 wins and six defeats. Last season we beat Lille at this stage 4-1 on aggregate.

Our defeat to Bayern Munich in 2019/20 was our first loss in a knockout match against a German club having progressed in the previous four, against Eintracht Frankfurt (in 2019), Bayern Munich (2005), Stuttgart (2004) and TSV Munich 1860 (1966).

The Blues had eight shots on target in the first leg in Dortmund, our highest number of shots on target without scoring on record (since 2003/04) in a single Champions League match.

Kai Havertz has had more shots (16) and more touches in the opposition box (36) than any other Chelsea player in this season’s competition. He was involved in eight of our 21 attempts in the first leg, having four shots and creating four chances.

Wayne Rooney (34) and Steven Gerrard (30) are the only Englishmen to have scored more career goals in the Champions League than Raheem Sterling (26).


Graham Potter is aiming to become the second English manager to win five Champions League games in a single season, after Bobby Robson with Newcastle in 2002/03 (five).

Chelsea have lost our last two penalty shoot-outs, both to Liverpool in last season’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals at Wembley. We last won one at home to Southampton in the Carabao Cup in October 2021.

Dortmund stats

This is Dortmund's 17th participation in the Champions League proper, and a club-record seventh season in succession. European champions in 1997, they were beaten by Bayern Munich in the 2013 final.

Borussia Dortmund have lost seven of their last eight away games in the Champions League knockout rounds, with the exception being a 3-2 win at Sevilla in the round of 16 in 2020/21.

BVB have lost their last five Champions League away games against English teams, since a 2-1 win at Arsenal in October 2013. They have won three and lost four (including the last three) of their two-legged knockout ties against English clubs.

Borussia Dortmund are looking to win both legs of a Champions League knockout round tie for the first time since 1996/97. They went on to lift the trophy for the first and only time that season.


Dortmund have progressed from five of their six previous Champions League knockout stage ties when winning the first leg, with the exception being against PSG in the 2019/20 round of 16.

BVB have lost their last two penalty shoot-outs, in the German Cup In 2019 and UEFA Super Cup in 2017. They last won one against Hertha Berlin in the German Cup in February 2017.
