Our 2024 summer schedule concludes with a home game Inter Milan on August 11. And ahead of that match, we look back at other summer friendlies that brought the curtain down on pre-season at Stamford Bridge.
While pre-season fixtures at Stamford Bridge were once a regular occurrence, Chelsea friendlies were played just twice on home turf in the 15 years prior to 2014.
They have become more commonplace in the last decade, but it's been three years since the Bridge hosted our final warm-up game ahead of a Premier League campaign.
So ahead of our high-profile clash with Inter, we reflect upon four occasions the Bridge has played host to our pre-season finale...
Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham – 2021
The most recent summer friendly at the Bridge was a special occasion. Not only was it against London rivals Spurs, but it saw us play at home as European champions for the first time since beating Manchester City in the Champions League final at the end of the previous season.
Captain Cesar Azpilicueta paraded the trophy around the pitch before kick-off, to loud applause from a packed Stamford Bridge crowd, which included 250 key workers invited as a show of gratitude for their efforts as things returned to normal following the Covid pandemic.
On the pitch, things started well for the Blues, as a pair of excellent Hakim Ziyech strikes gave us a two-goal lead shortly after half-time. However, following nine changes by the Blues, Tottenham fought back to secure a draw, despite being bossed by Chelsea for most of the game.
Chelsea 0-0 Lyon – 2018
Our 2018 International Champions Cup campaign concluded in London after draws with Inter and Arsenal in Nice and Dublin.
We had one win and one defeat in the resulting penalty shootouts and this game against French side Olympique Lyonnais followed a similar story.
A goalless 90 minutes saw things decided from the penalty spot again. It started and finished with familiar sights for Blues fans.
Jorginho began by netting his first penalty at the Bridge before Eden Hazard sealed the victory in a flawless shootout by Chelsea after goalkeeper Rob Green had saved Pape Diop’s fifth and final Lyon penalty.
Chelsea 0-1 Fiorentina – 2015
Our only home friendly defeat since Steve Clarke’s testimonial against PSV Eindhoven in 1996 came at the hands of Italian side Fiorentina.
However, coming just three days after our Community Shield match with Arsenal at Wembley, and three before our Premier League opener at home against Swansea City, it was a much-changed side selected by Jose Mourinho, with only captain John Terry retaining his place for the Premier League champions.
That showed as we struggled to test the opposition goalkeeper. The only goal came when Fiorentina defender Gonzalo Rodriguez scrambled home from close range following a corner.
Home debutant keeper Asmir Begovic will have been disappointed to concede having saved but failed to clear the initial effort by Marcos Alonso, who would join him at Chelsea the following year.
Chelsea 2-0 Real Sociedad – 2014
A glorious season for Chelsea begun with the first friendly at Stamford Bridge for eight years, when Spanish side Real Sociedad came to town.
Fittingly it was two Spanish internationals who caught the eye on their first home Blues appearances.
Alongside the returns of Jose Mourinho and Didier Drogba, the big news at Chelsea that summer was the signings of centre-forward Diego Costa to bring goals and playmaker Cesc Fabregas to provide the ammunition.
It was the striker who stole the show on this occasion, scoring twice in the torrential rain of the opening seven minutes to secure victory. He would keep that up with seven goals in his first four league games.
By the end of the season he would have 20 to his name and a Premier League winner’s medal, while Fabregas topped the assists chart with 18.
