This UEFA Conference League quarter-final tie between Chelsea and Legia Warsaw relocates from the banks of the Vistula to the valley of the Thames. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton look ahead to tonight's second leg at Stamford Bridge.

This is the 21st European quarter-final match to be played at Stamford Bridge. The winners of this tie will face a two-legged semi-final against either Djurgarden or Rapid Vienna, with the Austrians holding a 1-0 advantage from their first-leg success in Stockholm.

A long-throw infringement cost Legia Warsaw an equaliser at home to fellow Conference League contenders Jagiellonia at the weekend, the 1-0 loss leaving Poland’s most successful club fifth in the Ekstraklasa table with five games to go.

Chelsea came from behind to draw 2-2 with Ipswich at the Bridge on Sunday and our next Premier League action is at Fulham this weekend.

Last Thursday, the Blues maintained our unique record this season of winning every match in a UEFA competition proper, with a 3-0 victory at Legia’s lair. Now it is time to complete the job on home soil.

The Londoners, the first English club ever to play in Poland in 1936, are hoping to become the only British side to win a UEFA final there, with this season's Conference League final to be played at the Wroclaw Stadium on Wednesday 28 May.

Team news

The trio of Marcus Bettinelli, Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia will not be involved against Legia Warsaw, as they are not part of our UEFA Conference League squad.

The history

No Polish team has ever played at Stamford Bridge before tonight, while Legia have played on English soil four times previously without winning.

Legia Warsaw in England

1990/91 Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals - Manchester United 1-1 Legia Warsaw
1995/96 Champions League group stage - Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Legia Warsaw
2021/22 Europa League group stage - Leicester City 3-1 Legia Warsaw
2023/24 Conference League group stage - Aston Villa 2-1 Legia Warsaw

Know this...

No Chelsea player had ever come off the bench to score two goals in a major European competition before Noni Madueke in the first leg against Legia. He is the first to do so across all competitions for the Blues since Olivier Giroud, who netted twice as we came back from two down to win 3-2 at Southampton in the Premier League in 2018.

The Blues’ aggregate score in the Conference League proper is now 26-5.

The Londoners have progressed to the next round in each of our past 15 major European knockout ties after winning the first leg away from home.

This is the 16th match of Legia’s 2024/25 Conference League campaign, which started in July.

Potential Conference League semi-finalists Djurgarden were all set to be Chelsea’s first-ever European opponents in 1955 – but the Football League pressured Chelsea into withdrawing from the inaugural European Cup.

UEFA Conference League regulations

In the event of Chelsea and Tottenham both progressing to the last four of their respective UEFA competitions the order of the Blues’ fixtures will be reversed and the second leg will be played at Stamford Bridge.

The ‘away goals’ rule has not applied to UEFA competitions since 2021. In the event of an aggregate draw after 90 minutes tonight, the teams will play extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout.

The last European tie decided by penalty kicks involving Chelsea was the 2019 Europa League semi-final second leg at the Bridge against Eintracht Frankfurt. The teams emerged from extra time tied at 2-2 but, despite Cesar Azpilicueta being first to miss, the Blues reached the final thanks to twin saves by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

A player receiving three cautions will serve a one-match suspension. All yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals and are not carried into the semi-finals. No Chelsea players are on the two-bookings tightrope.
