Chelsea have reached the Champions League quarter-final second leg stage without losing a game for the first time (nine games), beating our previous record eight matches set in 2007/08 when we went on to lose the final in Moscow.Chelsea have won all three knockout games against Portuguese sides; Porto in 2006/07 and Benfica 2011/12, both in the Champions League quarter-finals, and the Europa League final against Benfica in 2013.In the first leg last week, two English players scored for Chelsea in the same Champions League match for the first time since John Terry and Frank Lampard against Napoli in March 2012.Thomas Tuchel could become the second Blues manager to win his first four games in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The previous manager to do this was Roberto Di Matteo in 2011/12.No side has conceded fewer goals (two) or kept more clean sheets (seven) in this season's Champions League than Chelsea (level with Man City in both cases).Since the beginning of 2018, we have won three and lost three penalty shoot-outs. This is Porto's seventh appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals. They have not won a last-eight tie since claiming their second European Cup under future Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in 2004. They have lost the last three to Man Utd in 2009, Bayern Munich (2015) and Liverpool (2019).Porto are winless in their last 14 away games in the Champions League knockout stages (four draws, 10 defeats), conceding two or more goals on 10 occasions in this run.Porto have only won two of their last 12 knockout stage matches in the Champions League, losing three quarter-final games in that run. There have only been four previous occasions of a side progressing after losing the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie without scoring a goal at ‘home’ – Ajax in 1995/96 v Panathinaikos, Inter Milan in 2010/11 v Bayern Munich, Man Utd in 2018/19 v PSG and Tottenham in 2018/19 v Ajax.Porto are winless in seven Champions League games against English opponents, since beating Leicester City 5-0 in December 2016.
Porto's record in two-legged ties with English clubs is three wins and nine defeats. They have lost the last six, most recently against Liverpool at this stage two seasons ago and have not beaten English opposition in a knockout tie since Mourinho's side eliminated Man Utd in the 2003/04 Champions League round of 16.
In the first leg, Pepe (38 years 40 days) became the oldest outfield player to appear in a Champions League quarter-final since Ryan Giggs back in April 2014 (40y 123d v Bayern Munich). If selected, Malang Sarr will be the second Chelsea loan player to play against us in the Champions League following Thibaut Courtois for Atletico Madrid in the 2013/14 semi-final. His last appearance for Porto was in the last round of the Champions League at Juventus on 9 March. In recent weeks he has been playing for Porto II in the Secunda Liga.Porto have lost their last seven penalty shoot-outs in all competitions. Before this tie, Sergio Conceicao had never managed a team against Chelsea although he has played against us twice for Lazio in the Champions League in 1999 and 2003.
