Ahead of our Vitality Women’s FA Cup final showdown against Manchester United on Sunday, we take a look at Chelsea Women’s cup campaign so far, which began at the turn of the year.

We are the defending cup holders having overcome Manchester City 3-2 in last year’s final. Sam Kerr’s brace and Erin Cuthbert’s strike after extra time sealed a fourth FA Cup triumph for the Blues under Emma Hayes’ leadership.

This time around, we entered the competition at the fourth round in January and overcame fellow Women’s Super League opposition in each of our four matches on our way to the showpiece final at Wembley, where we will be aiming to secure a fifth FA Cup trophy.

Let’s take a look back at our journey to Wembley this season…

Fourth round – Liverpool (H)

Our FA Cup campaign began on 29 January when Liverpool were the visitors to Kingsmeadow. We secured a 3-2 victory on home soil against Matt Beard’s side who produced a valiant performance to make us work for our place in the fifth round.

Sam Kerr scored a brace to give us a two-goal cushion before the hour mark, before Ceri Holland reduced the deficit with half an hour to play. Kerr netted her hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining only for Gemma Bonner to pull another goal back, but we stood firm to secure the victory.

Fifth round – Arsenal (H)

The fifth-round draw pitted us against Arsenal on 26 February with Kingsmeadow the venue for the second round running. It was a blockbuster encounter on paper and the Blues emerged 2-0 winners on the day.

Sophie Ingle opened the scoring in the first half with a sweeping finish into the bottom corner, before Kerr doubled our lead just before the hour mark. We remained resolute at the back to protect the clean sheet and secure our passage to the quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals – Reading (A)

At the last eight, the draw took us on the road for the first time in this year’s competition and for the third round running, we faced fellow WSL opponents in the shape of Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on 19 March.

Jess Carter, Maren Mjelde and Guro Reiten put us in the driving seat before the hour mark, Sanne Troelsgaard netted a consolation with 20 minutes to play however, we managed the remaining quarter-of-an-hour efficiently to seal our semi-final place.

Semi-finals – Aston Villa (A)

For the fourth consecutive round, we faced WSL opposition at the semi-final stage where we edged past a resilient Aston Villa outfit by a single goal from Kerr, who has been in fine form in front of goal in all competitions this season.

On the hour, Reiten delivered an inviting cross to the far post where Kerr was waiting to rise highest and power home her header, the deciding goal in the tie and a finish which booked our date with Manchester United in Sunday’s final.

The Vitality Women’s FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester United kicks off at 2.30pm (UK time) at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 14 May and the match has been selected for live television broadcast on BBC One.
