Plenty of Blues have been in international action this week, with many contesting one last friendly game before Euro 2022 gets underway…
Monday
England U19s 4 Norway U19s 1
England’s Under-19 side kicked off their European Championship campaign with an emphatic win over Norway in the Czech Republic.
Aggie Beever-Jones bagged a brace, Jorja Fox also netted and Charlotte Wardlaw captained the Young Lionesses from the heart of defence.
Tuesday
Sweden 3 Brazil 1
In front of a record crowd for a women’s national team fixture in Sweden, the hosts came from behind to beat Brazil 3-1, with captain Magda Eriksson named Player of the Match.
Trailing to a 50th-minute strike, Sweden turned it around, helped by a triple-substitution, to lead heading into the final quarter of the game. Stina Blackstenius of Arsenal secured victory in the closing stages to send the 33,218 fans home happy on a sweltering hot night in Stockholm. Zecira Musovic was an unused sub.
Sweden’s Euro 2022 campaign starts against the Netherlands at Brammall Lane next Saturday 9 July.
Netherlands 3 Belarus 0
The Dutch warmed up for that mouthwatering clash with a comfortable World Cup qualifying victory against Belarus in Enschede. Aniek Nouwen played all but the final seven minutes and scored Netherlands’ second goal in a 3-0 win, powerfully heading in an inswinging free-kick on the hour.
Wales 0 New Zealand 0
In the heat of southern Spain, Wales and New Zealand played out a goalless draw in their final friendly before a pair of vital World Cup qualifiers in September.
Sophie Ingle captained the Welsh, whose best chance saw Natasha Harding fire wide from an Ingle pass, while the Football Ferns hit the woodwork.
Poppy Soper was an unused sub, with Ingle taken off 10 minutes from time.
Wednesday
Denmark 1 Norway 2
There was a meeting of Chelsea players in a hard-fought Scandinavian clash between Denmark and Norway, played in neutral territory on the west coast of Sweden on Wednesday.
Pernille Harder captained the Danes and Maren Mjelde took the armband for Norway, but it was another Blue, Guro Reiten, who stole the show.
Denmark went ahead inside 60 seconds and Harder hit the post shortly afterwards, but Norway hit back as Reiten netted either side of the break. Her first was a deflected strike from distance, with the winning goal on 52 minutes a typically composed close-range finish.
All three Chelsea players were subbed off in the final quarter-of-an-hour. Afterwards Harder picked up the Player of the Match award.
Norway’s Euro 2022 campaign starts against Northern Ireland on Thursday, with Denmark facing Germany the following day.
Thursday
Switzerland 0 England 4
England made light work of fellow Euro 2022 contestants Switzerland in their final warm-up game in Zurich.
After a disjointed first half, the Lionesses burst into life after the break and scored four goals, sub Bethany England netting the third with a header from a corner.
Millie Bright and Fran Kirby started, and the latter was denied a very early opening goal by a superb save. Jess Carter came off the bench to make her 10th appearances for the Lionesses.
England get Euro 2022 underway with a game against Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
England U19s 0 Sweden U19s 1
In England Under-19s’ second game at the Euros, they were beaten by an early Swedish goal. Wardlaw, Beever-Jones and Fox all started. The third group game is on Sunday against Germany.
Friday
France 7 Vietnam 0
A French team containing new Chelsea signing Eve Perisset at right-back thumped Vietnam 7-0, with six of the goals coming before the break. Perisset had a couple of shots of her own before being replaced on the hour.
Saturday
Netherlands 2 Finland 0
Nouwen completed the full 90 minutes as the Netherlands won their second game of the week and last before the start of Euro 2022. Vivienne Miedema scored in each half. The Dutch play Sweden next Saturday in their maiden group stage fixture.
