Chelsea Women’s Millie Bright has called for the Blues to be consistent and clinical as we prepare to face Vllaznia in the UEFA Women’s Champions League at Kingsmeadow tonight (Wednesday).
After an impressive 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one, we welcome Albanian champions Vllaznia on matchday two where the goal is to keep the momentum going as we aim to stretch our winning run to six games in all competitions.
This fixture breaks new ground for both sides who have never encountered each other on the European stage previously with Vllaznia making history, becoming the first Albanian side to reach this stage of UEFA competition in 33 years.

Going up against an opposition we have never faced poses its challenges. However, Bright says preparations will be treated the same as any other match and praised the backroom staff for getting the team so well-equipped.
‘They played against Real Madrid, so we’ve got footage from that game and are analysing that. All the guys upstairs working behind the scenes are brilliant. We’re always full-prepared going into every single game so whether we’ve played an opponent or not, the guys working behind the scenes are getting everything we need to know about this team, the threats that they bring and how ultimately we’re going to go out there, put on a performance and ultimately get the win.’
Having studied Vllaznia in detail, Bright expects our opponents to provide a stern test on Wednesday. The centre-half says the Blues will maintain respect and approach the game in the correct way to get the desired result.
‘They’re very organised, a very disciplined team, really hard to break down and trying to catch you committing bodies and then catch you on the counter attack, so definitely a different challenge. In the Champions League, you don’t underestimate anyone.
‘I know being a Chelsea player that our mentality is to respect every opponent, really focus on ourselves and make sure our game plan is right so that everyone is in the best place going into this game so we can deliver on the night. It’s just making sure we’re fully prepared. We’ve had good training preparations so everyone is looking fit and sharp and excited to get going again.’
After the win against PSG, general manager Paul Green stressed the importance of maintaining that level of performance throughout the group stage. Bright echoed this view saying it’s crucial that we keep up the high standards throughout a long season.
‘We need to be consistent in our performances and not only do it against PSG, but go and do it tonight, the game after that and the game after that, taking our Champions League performances into the league and taking our league performances into the Champions League.
‘It’s all about momentum and staying in that place of high performance week in, week out and keeping everyone up to that level. Everyone contributes to that and the level of training has been exceptional. Everyone has been switched on and the team is just really driven. I completely agree that we have to keep the consistency and it not just be a one-off performance.’
