Chelsea Women welcome Liverpool to Kingsmeadow in the Women's Super League this Sunday, our first home league fixture of 2023.

The Blues return to home soil for the first time since December 11, where we rounded off 2022 with a 3-2 league victory over Reading in freezing temperatures, three points which ensured we entered the winter break at the top of the league table.

On our return to league action last weekend, we faced a difficult trip to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium as the division’s top two teams went head-to-head. Kim Little’s second-half penalty was cancelled out by Sam Kerr’s 89th-minute equaliser to salvage a vital point for the Blues.

With that point, we extended our unbeaten run in the league to 10 matches and maintained our three-point lead at the summit ahead of the visit of Liverpool to Kingsmeadow, where we will be aiming to maintain our title challenge with a victory on home soil in front of our supporters.

The form

We began the New Year with the 1-1 draw at Arsenal, a game defined by two key moments which led to a share of the spoils. This was only our second draw this season, the other coming against Real Madrid on matchday four of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stages.

Prior to this, we enjoyed nine consecutive league victories and the point at Arsenal means we retain our three-point advantage at the top with 28 points from 33 available. We have won nine, drawn one and lost one of our 11 league matches to date.

During this time, we have scored 32 goals and conceded just nine in the process leaving us with a goal difference of +23. This is the second best in the division after second place Manchester United with +24.

Australian striker Sam Kerr has scored 48 Barclays WSL goals in just 57 appearances for Chelsea, scoring the equaliser against Arsenal in our previous match. Only eight players have scored 50+ Barclays WSL goals previously.

As for our opponents, Liverpool are in the ninth place with eight points, having won two, drawn two and lost six of their 10 league matches. They have scored 11 goals during this time and conceded 22 in the process, giving them a goal difference of -11.

Chelsea Women vs Liverpool Women recent head-to-head record

Our previous league meeting with Liverpool came on the opening day of this season, where we fell to a 2-1 defeat at Prenton Park in September.

Fran Kirby gave us an early lead from the penalty spot, but Liverpool were awarded two second-half penalties which Katie Stengel dispatched to give the newly promoted Reds all three points.

Liverpool are looking to become the first-ever newly promoted club to complete a Barclays WSL double over the reigning champions.

Next up for the Blues

It’s a quick turnaround as we prepare to begin our FA Continental Tyres League Cup campaign at the quarter-final stage, where we will take on Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday 25 January at Brisbane Road.

We travel to east London looking to book our place in the semi-finals of the competition which we have won on two previous occasions.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm (UK time) and the match will be available to watch on the FA Player.
