Games don't get much bigger than Chelsea Women's next fixture, as we welcome the European champions to west London with a place in the Women's Champions League semi-finals at stake.

The Blues hold a narrow 1-0 lead over Lyon from the first leg in France last week, but it is still very much all to play for against a side which has won this competition on eight occasions, including in six of the last seven seasons.

Chelsea Women are at home against Lyon on Thursday 30 March for the second leg of the Women's Champions League quarter-finals, with the game to be played at Stamford Bridge.

The form

Chelsea suffered a setback at the weekend as we were beaten 2-0 away at Manchester City in the Women's Super League, tasting defeat for just the second time in all competitions since the opening day of the season back in September, the other being the Continental League Cup final against Arsenal.

We have still won nine of our 12 games since the start of 2023, though, and remain undefeated in the Champions League, with the first-leg win over Lyon making it six wins and one draw in Europe this season, following an impressive showing in a group which featured Real Madrid and Lyon's main domestic rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

Lyon didn't reach this stage of the Champions League quite so smoothly, as injury problems earlier in the season impacted their European campaign. However, they recovered well after picking up just one point from their first two games, against Arsenal and Juventus, to secure second place in the group.

Their domestic form remains strong too, as they climbed above PSG to the top of the French table with five games left, thanks to a 6-0 win over Guingamp in their last game on Saturday. Lyon have lost just one league game all season, to Paris in December, since when they have won all six matches, scoring 21 goals and conceding just once in the process.

Guro Reiten's stunning first-half goal, curled into the bottom corner after brilliant work by Erin Cuthbert to create the chance, settled a close and thrilling first leg in Lyon last week, which saw both sides hit the woodwork and opportunities go begging at either end.

That was only the third time we have faced the French side competitively, the others being the two legs of our Champions League semi-final in 2018/19. We were away in the first leg then, too, with Cuthbert scoring to give us a chance following a 2-1 defeat. Lyon extended their lead at Kingsmeadow via a deflected effort, though, and despite Ji So-Yun scoring a superb free-kick and Karen Carney striking the post late on, we couldn't quite do enough to force extra time.

We also met Lyon in pre-season last summer in Portland, America. Goals from Sam Kerr and Lauren James gave us a deserved 2-0 lead before a flurry of substitutions disrupted the game, after which Lyon brought it back to 2-2 before winning 4-3 on penalties.

Attention switches back to the Women's Super League this weekend, as we travel to Birmingham to face Aston Villa away. Kick-off is at 6.45pm on Sunday 2 April.
