Chelsea’s long and storied history in the FA Cup continues today when we play Morecambe in the third round at Stamford Bridge. Before kick-off, check out the players who have featured most often for the Blues in the famous old competition.
Unsurprisingly, the list contains many of our all-time greats, and seven players whose longevity at Stamford Bridge was rewarded with success in the FA Cup…
Ron Harris – 64 FA Cup appearances
Ron Harris stands ahead of everyone in our all-time appearance list with 795, so it is no surprise he leads the way in the FA Cup, too. Chopper memorably captained us to our maiden triumph in the competition in 1970 (pictured top), having first played for us in the Cup in January 1964. His last Cup appearance for the Blues was 16 years later, in January 1980.
Frank Lampard – 58
Frank Lampard barely missed an FA Cup game of ours during his 13 years at Stamford Bridge. He was our best player in the 2002 final defeat to Arsenal at Cardiff, before going on to lift the trophy four times, scoring the winner against Everton in 2009.
John Terry – 58
Appropriately level with his great friend Lampard, John Terry was involved in two more FA Cup finals than him, as an unused sub in 2000 and 2017. No player has won the FA Cup for Chelsea more often than JT with five winners' medals while in our colours, and the competition also handed him his first Blues goal in February 2000.
Peter Bonetti – 57
There were 18 years between Peter Bonetti’s first and last FA Cup appearances for us, and in that period, he helped us reach the final twice. The Cat was ever present in our run to glory in 1970, showcasing his bravery and agility in both games against Leeds.
John Hollins – 51
Another player whose Chelsea FA Cup career spanned nearly two decades after he re-signed for us in 1983, midfield maestro John Hollins played in the finals of 1967 and 1970.
Roy Bentley – 42
The great Roy Bentley, who captained us to our first Championship, averaged a goal every other game in the FA Cup. His early brace in the semi-final in 1950 wasn’t enough to see us past Arsenal, so unfortunately his wonderful Chelsea career ended without success in the Cup.
Eddie McCreadie – 41
Like Harris, Bonetti and Hollins, Eddie McCreadie played every game in our conquest of the Cup in 1970, with his indefatigable fighting spirit proving especially useful in the brutal final replay against Leeds.
Ken Armstrong – 39
English international Ken Armstrong played over 400 times for Chelsea in the 1940s and 1950s. He scored five goals in his 39 FA Cup appearances, with two of those coming in his first game in the competition against Barrow.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 39
Such was his importance to the team, the early rounds of the FA Cup were often used as a chance to rest Cesar Azpilicueta, with the defender never playing more than four FA Cup games in a season. He was victorious in one of the four finals he started, against Manchester United in 2018, and skippered us for the first time in the semi-final against Spurs a year earlier.
John Harris – 38
John Harris was a fixture in our defence for a decade after the Second World War. Of his 38 FA Cup appearances, a remarkable 12 were replays, in the days when ties went on and on without extra-time and penalties. Harris played in both FA Cup semi-final replay defeats to Arsenal in 1950 and 1952.
Dennis Wise – 38
Dennis Wise had the honour of captaining us in the memorable FA Cup success of 1997. He did likewise three years later when he took his young son Henry up the Wembley steps to lift the Cup. As someone in our team when we were well beaten by Man United in the 1994 final, they were extra special moments.
