Matchday skipper Ben Chilwell was delighted to be involved once again, making his first start since September as the Blues saw off Middlesbrough to book their place in the Carabao Cup final.
Despite going into the second leg of the semi-final a goal down, Chelsea responded quickly racing to a 4-0 lead before half-time with strikes from Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi and Cole Palmer, alongside an own-goal, giving the Blues a commanding lead.
After the break, it was supported by Palmer's second of the match while Noni Madueke added gloss to the scoreline, securing a 6-1 victory.
Chilwell, who captained the side during the match, was pleased to be back on the Stamford Bridge grass in front of his adoring supporters, as he produced another solid display in Blue to reach another showpiece event.
‘I feel great now being back,’ he began. ‘Today was my first start in a while and I got to the 60th minute and I was starting to cramp up a little bit, but I gave everything I had to the game today and saw how far I can get. It’s brilliant to be back.
‘I love to play here in front of the fans. They give me such a good reception whenever I come here. Fortunately, personally and as a team, we repaid them with a win because they were brilliant today. My voice is gone, I’ve been shouting during the game!’
The 27-year-old was particularly happy to get over the line with such a dominant display following a tough contest at the Riverside Stadium during the first leg.
Chilwell continued: ‘Before the game, we knew how important it was. There was no need to motivate anyone today, everyone knew what was up for grabs – a Wembley final. It doesn’t get any better than that.
‘Obviously, the first leg was difficult. I wasn’t there, but looking on TV, it looked like a difficult game and we knew what style of football they were going to play and it was going to be difficult to break them down.
‘We needed to get that early goal and then the crowd were behind us and we kept pushing with as much energy as possible and caused them mistakes.’
With Chilwell having won the Champions League and Super Cup during his time in SW6, the left-back is excited at the potential to add to his collection.
‘I’d love to win the League Cup,’ he said. ‘Obviously, I haven’t won that, and I think it was a few years ago when we got to the final and lost, but I’m looking forward to getting back there and hopefully getting the win this time.’
Saving his final message for Cole Palmer, who once again etched his name onto the scoresheet, Chilwell praised his teammate’s exceptional attitude and ability, and explained he is hoping for more of the same.
‘He's top,’ Chilwell added. ‘He’s so chilled on and off the pitch. You can see when he scores, obviously he cares, but it’s so nonchalant. It doesn’t faze him. He’s a top guy and a top player.
‘It’s important now that he continues this. He has started, in the first half of the season, brilliantly and he is so important for us, so it’s important he continues like that for the rest of the season. We have some massive games coming up, and hopefully, he can keep it going.’
