While disappointed with our 4-1 reverse at Anfield last night, Carney Chukwuemeka was still pleased to earn further minutes on the pitch as he continues his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

The 20-year-old has worked hard to get back into Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, making his first appearance since August during our recent 1-0 victory over Fulham in mid-January.

As he continues to build up his match fitness, the midfielder was introduced to the action against Liverpool game with 25 minutes to go, earning an assist for Christopher Nkunku’s consolation strike.

‘It was good to get some minutes after coming back from a long injury,’ Carney began.

‘We just have to keep working hard in training and for me personally, I just want to keep working my way up to full match fitness.

‘We’re obviously disappointed because we came here in high spirits expecting to get a result, but it wasn’t meant to be.’

Chukwuemeka feels that the squad still have plenty of room to develop and he believes that overcoming setbacks like the one suffered against the Reds will contribute to our progress.

‘We’re a young team and we’re still growing together,’ he added.

‘I wouldn't say that it was too big of a challenge for us, I would just say that we weren’t at it. We’re growing together.

‘We’re getting the squad back together now which is good, we just have to keep working hard in training and gelling with one another – creating a team rather than individuals – and then we will definitely have some good results coming up.

‘We will learn from this, keep improving and definitely bounce back for the next game.’
