Chelsea Under-21s head coach Filipe Coelho reflects on his side's recent victory in the Premier League Cup opener against Brentford, while looking ahead to the return to league action as we prepare to host West Bromwich at Kingsmeadow for a Saturday afternoon kick-off.

The Blues are set to return to Premier League 2 action following an impressive Premier League Cup outing against Brentford, where we secured a convincing 6-3 win at Kingsmeadow.

Despite being the brighter side, it was Brentford who opened the scoring, through Ashley Hay. Although Deivid Washington produced an acrobatic volley, we went into the break trailing due to Hay's second goal.

It wasn't until the second half that we found our rhythm. Tyrique George netted his first hat-trick of the campaign, which combined with two own goals from our opponents, caused by defensive mix-ups, sealed our successful afternoon.

Head coach Coelho, eager to maintain the team's winning streak, is focused on keeping the positive momentum going when we host West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League 2 next.

'Brentford was a very competitive match,' the 39-year-old reflected. 'Our opponents came out with full force. I'm starting to understand that every match we play, regardless of the team, will be a real contest. As Chelsea, everyone wants to give their best performance against us.

'We have to approach every fixture with the same strong mentality and fierce attack, showing that we are ready for any fight that comes our way, no matter the competition.

'In the first half, we struggled physically. But as the match progressed, we grew into the game and gained more confidence.

'Straight away, I realised we need to improve and bring that intensity from the start. We need to come out with full force at kick-off and not allow our opponents any opportunity to gain an advantage, as Brentford did.

'I've spoken about the importance of energy before, and it remains crucial. The boys understand that energy and the speed of the game can have a huge impact on the outcome. The energy was much lower than I had hoped for in the first half, but after speaking at half-time and reflecting on our performance, we saw a change and a reaction.'

Trailing by a goal at half-time, Chelsea went into the break 2-1 down. However, the second half saw a turnaround, with the team applying immediate pressure, which ultimately led us to secure all three points in our first group stage match.

Coelho continued: 'The half-time talk was crucial and marked a turning point in the match. I felt we weren't playing at our best, and we had much more to offer.

'We had to react and play to our strengths, and that's exactly what we did. Reactions are everything, and they show the mentality of the boys. They're committed to working hard and reflecting on their performances to constantly improve.

'Tyrique’s hat-trick was well deserved. He had a great game and showed excellent reactions throughout. I was pleased for him.

'But I was equally pleased with the team connections and bonds that led to those goals. Tyrique was doing his job by scoring, but when you look closely at the build-up, the team play and the communication that put him in position to score, that impressed me the most.'

Looking ahead to this weekend's clash against West Brom at our home ground, the Portuguese coach emphasised the importance of continuing the development process, regardless of the competition.

'Although we're switching back to the Premier League 2, we won’t view the game any differently. It’s a different competition, but we want the same outcome.

'We’ll attack with the same aggression and strong mindset. We want to see energy, and we want to see how the team and individuals can bring higher intensity to the game. No matter who we face or the circumstances, we are progressing with each fixture, and that's the goal every week.

'My main aim for this weekend is to see a change in our approach, reflecting on the Brentford game and applying those lessons against West Brom. I want to see that reaction and high energy from start to finish.

'We are on a good path of development and I’m enjoying watching this journey. I want to see passion, fierce and aggressive play, and a positive mindset that’s not afraid to fight for victory.

'Kingsmeadow is our home and it's a great ground. We're proud to play there every week. We feel confident and I’m sure we’ll put on another strong performance in this home fixture.'
