A rivalry with Liverpool is nothing new to Cole Palmer. His upbringing in Manchester has ensured that. But now in London and a Chelsea player, there is a new significance to matches with the Reds.
Mourinho versus Benitez. Champions League heartache and Champions League delight. Wembley joy and Wembley pain. The last two decades have resulted in a range of emotions for Chelsea supporters when facing the red half of Merseyside.
For Palmer, it’s a little different. His two outings against Liverpool as a Chelsea player have ended in disappointment. Sunday’s trip to Anfield – where last season the Blues were well beaten – presents an opportunity to change that.
‘I just remember the Anfield crowd from our last game there,’ Cole recalls shortly after collecting his Player of the Month Award.
‘They had a great team then and they’ve got a great team now, so it will be a difficult game if we’re not 100 per cent on it.
‘As a boy from Manchester, you’re aware of the relationship between both cities. It’s a bit of a rivalry.
'Everyone knows what their stadium is like, what their fans are like and what their team is like, but we will treat it like a normal game.’
Such an approach has served Palmer throughout his time at Stamford Bridge. No matter the feats he has produced or the awards he has won, the 22-year-old has remained level-headed.
That is something highlighted by head coach Enzo Maresca, who has discussed Palmer's humility. Yet there is little doubt Cole has proved himself a man for the big occasion.
Naturally, his strike for England in the European Championship final comes to mind. As do goals last season against Manchester City, Newcastle United and Arsenal – and his hat-trick in our dramatic victory over Manchester United in March.
We will face three of those clubs, Newcastle, Arsenal and United, before the next international break, which coupled with our trip to Anfield presents an opportunity for the Blues to put down a marker in the Premier League.
It is something Palmer appreciates: ‘Everyone will be looking at us to see if we’ve made progress and improvement or if we’re just in a good spell.
‘If we can put in some good performances and get a good number of points then it will be really good for us this season.’
With five six goals scored and five crafted for his team-mates this season, in addition to his feats last term, the Blues star is firmly on the radar of every elite defender in the Premier League. But perhaps unsurprisingly, Palmer is enjoying the extra attention.
‘Towards the end of last season, maybe like the last three or four months, I felt like I was getting marked more and it has carried on into this season,’ Cole continued.
‘It seems like [I’m getting fouled more]! I’m going to get double shin pads – one at the front and one at the back! They only do little kicks so it doesn’t hurt too much. I see it as a compliment.’
