Cole Palmer acknowledges recent results haven’t matched our promising first half of the season, but he and his fellow Blues are working hard every day to change that.

With 20 goal involvements (14 goals and six assists) to his name in the league so far, Palmer has once again been an influential figure in the Blues side – and he is well on his way to matching last term’s incredible figure of 33.

Unsurprisingly, the ever-laidback Cole is unfazed by such achievements, though, insisting he was always confident he could be a big hit at Stamford Bridge.

‘I didn’t think it would happen this quick, but I knew I could do it,’ explained Palmer. ‘I just try to work hard every day, listen to the coaches, stuff like that. I just want to play football.’

That doesn’t mean he isn’t keen to improve both his and the team’s fortunes, though. Despite a run of eight consecutive victories in all competitions up to late December – and 12 games without defeat – Chelsea have found wins harder to come by since, although we have triumphed in three of our last six fixtures.

We remain well in the hunt for a top-four finish, currently occupying fourth place in the Premier League table, but Palmer is eager to improve results.

‘I think we started well,’ he added. ‘We had a little bit of a dip but we’re just trying to find our form again.'

Like all the Chelsea first-team players, Palmer is working closely with head coach Enzo Maresca, someone Cole knows well from their time working together at Manchester City.

He said: ‘I knew Enzo previously, so to work with him again is amazing. Obviously the head coach has given us all the ideas, we’ve just got to execute it

‘My relationship is good with the head coach and my team-mates. We’re all close.'

Finally, Palmer discussed his excellent record from the penalty spot, insisting his nerveless spot-kicks are just down to talent and composure, rather than constant repetition on the Cobham training pitch.

He said: ‘I don’t practice them. Maybe I’ll take like three penalties the day before a game, but it’s not something I practice. But as long as I score, I don’t mind how the goals come.’

That is a sentiment shared by all at Chelsea, as hopefully there will be plenty more Palmer goals to celebrate during the remainder of this season – from the penalty spot or otherwise - starting on Friday evening when we travel to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
