Levi Colwill suffered the misfortune of putting through his own net against Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final at Wembley today, ending Huddersfield’s hopes of returning to the Premier League.
In trying to intercept a teasing cross from James Garner as the half-time whistle approached, the 19-year-old could only turn the ball past Lee Nicholls in the Terriers goal, settling a typically tight second tier play-off final.
It was harsh on Colwill, playing his 32nd game for Huddersfield this season in what has been an excellent first loan spell for the defender. Deployed on the left side of Huddersfield’s back three, he helped keep Forest’s dangerous right-flank pair of Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson largely quiet.
Tino Anjorin, who has spent the second half of this season on loan in Yorkshire, remained an unused sub.
Prior to the only goal, Ryan Yates had headed a good chance wide for Forest, and Danny Ward saw Huddersfield’s best effort before the break deflected wide.
The Terriers enjoyed much more possession in the second half as Forest sat back, but clear chances were at a premium. Former Chelsea Academy midfielder Jon Russell was brought on and added urgency to their play, and there was a big moment with a little over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
Harry Toffolo went down under pressure from Jack Colback chasing a pass infield. Referee Jon Moss booked the Huddersfield man for simulation, and his initial decision was upheld after a lengthy VAR check. There is no doubt it will be a major talking point in the coming days. They had another big claim for a penalty minutes later.
Huddersfield pushed hard in the closing stages but try as they might, an equaliser was not forthcoming. It is Nottingham Forest who complete next season’s Premier League, where they will compete for the first time since 1998/99.
Elsewhere on loan...
The only other Chelsea player still in action on loan over the last week was Bryan Fiabema, in two top-flight matches in Norway with Rosenborg. Having been an unused substitute in a 3-3 draw with Haugesund in midweek, the teenage forward made a near-instant impact off the bench on Sunday, helping Rosenborg win 4-0 away at Valerenga.
Fiabema was introduced with 27 minutes remaining, but needed just five of them to make his mark with his first assist of the season. It came at the end of a quick counter-attack from Rosenborg after defending a corner, Fiabema getting on the end of a deep cross from the right at the back post and squaring across goal to allow team-mate Adrian Pereira a simple tap-in to complete the rout.
