When Pedro Neto picked up the ball deep into injury time at Craven Cottage, swivelled and rifled a winner into the roof of the net, Levi Colwill had the perfect view.
A player who knows more than most what it means to be Chelsea, the Cobham graduate immediately lifted his arms aloft and chased the matchwinner to join in the wild celebrations in front of the travelling Blues.
It secured a vital three points in our search for Champions League football, further bragging rights over our near-neighbours and jubilant scenes in the packed away end behind the goal.
Neto’s winner came after Tyrique George had cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s opener for the Whites with his first in the Premier League. That goal came with seven minutes left on the clock, before Pedro’s late, late show arrived.
For Colwill, he was delighted with the victory but was quick to highlight that the Chelsea display of the second half, rather than the first, is what should be the standard for the remaining games of the campaign.
‘Really happy with the win and to celebrate with the fans at the end was special,’ defender Colwill stated post-match. ‘We work so hard for them [fans], so to see them head home happy at the end is a great feeling.
‘It’s a big win for us at this stage of the season anyway but when you consider it’s a local derby, with the rivalry in place, then it means that bit more.
‘It meant a lot to us, especially in the manner that we got the winner through Pedro, and to celebrate with the fans at the end was really special.
‘It keeps us pushing for a top four finish and to secure Champions League football, which is what everybody wants and a club like Chelsea should be playing in the best competitions.
‘We all knew the first half wasn’t good enough. So, in the second half, we knew we’d have to sit in, dig deep and show how much we wanted this win.
‘I think in the second half you saw a different Chelsea and that’s the Chelsea we need to start with every game.’
The result sees Enzo Maresca’s side stay in touching distance of the sides above us, while moving above Nottingham Forest – who we meet at the City Ground on the final day – on goal difference ahead of their game with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday evening.
For Colwill, confidence can be taken from this three points but insists that we must remain grounded and just focus on each game as it comes.
‘This is a huge win for us because coming to Fulham is never easy,’ added Colwill.
‘It can definitely give us confidence for the remaining games – both in the league and in Europe – but we have to just keep taking each game as it comes.
‘The focus now is on Everton in our next game, a tough fixture, but one we can take confidence into following this victory.’
