Levi Colwill has said the trust put in him by Enzo Maresca has led to him playing his best football, with the defender admitting he is full of confidence every time he pulls on the Chelsea shirt at the moment.
The Cobham graduate put in another fine display at the heart of the Blues backline on Saturday, partnering Wesley Fofana and helping us to a 4-2 home win over his former loan side Brighton & Hove Albion.
All four goals were netted by Cole Palmer – a player Colwill labelled as a ‘special talent’ – but overall the defender was encouraged by the whole team performance, having responded strongly to going behind early at Stamford Bridge.
Colwill, who wears the No.6 shirt for Chelsea, believes the three points secured against the Seagulls highlights just how well the Blues are playing under Maresca and he has called on us to maintain this momentum as we head into a busy October across domestic and European competition.
‘It was a really good result [against Brighton] and a really strong team performance,’ Levi acknowledged at the final whistle. ‘I think last season, this game would have been a lot different.
‘I wouldn’t say we were completely at our best, we know we can still improve, but we got a big three points and hopefully we can maintain this momentum and keep building in the right direction under the gaffer.
‘At times it really clicked for us and when we do play our best football, we look very dangerous. We’ve also got that extra spark in us to win games through sheer talent, which showed with how Cole performed.’
There’s no doubting that Palmer deservedly took the plaudits after such a stunning individual performance, with his four-goal haul enough to see him leave with the matchball.
While pleased with the team’s showing, Colwill was quick to heap praise on his Chelsea and England team-mate and acknowledge the impact he’s having on games.
‘Cole’s an amazing player,’ added the defender. ‘The best players in football have that bit of magic to pull you out of sticky situations.
‘He did that against Brighton, he helped us turn the game around with four big goals. He helps us so much and he certainly did in this game to help us get the three points.
‘Cole is a massive player for us. Look at him against Brighton - he scores out of nothing and he turns half chances into goals. He’s a really special player and we all know that he can go on a level yet, which is the scary thing.’
Colwill has been a regular under Maresca, the Italian head coach who arrived in the summer to replace Mauricio Pochettino, and Levi highlighted how much he feels he is improving under the guidance of the former Leicester boss.
‘I’m really happy with my form so far this season and I put a lot of that down to the gaffer,’ said Colwill.
‘He’s given me a lot of confidence and he’s put a lot of trust in me to play my football. He wants me to start attacks from the back and having that trust makes me feel a big part of how we want to play.
‘I want to thank him for giving the opportunities to play and for allowing me to play my football in the way I feel I’m good at. He’s always pushing me and I’m really enjoy working under him.’
