Marc Cucurella became the latest player to win the European Championship with their nation while representing Chelsea at club level. Here are all the others…
Champions of Europe, we know what we are. That has been a common chant at Stamford Bridge ever since our first Champions League triumph in Munich in 2012. It is now also true for Marc Cucurella after their own victory in Germany, helping Spain to win Euro 2024 in Berlin on Sunday evening.
Spain went 1-0 up through Nico Williams after 47 minutes, but the game was level in the 73rd as Blues forward Cole Palmer equalised for England, scoring his first goal of the tournament, mere minutes after entering the pitch.
But with extra-time looming, Cucurella played a superb low cross into the box to find Mikel Oyarzabal, and the latter steered the ball into the back of the net in the 86th minute to secure Spain a fourth European triumph.
However, he is far from the first Chelsea player to lift the Euros trophy during their time with the club. It has happened on three previous occasions and we take a look through Cucurella's illustrious predecessors.
Jorginho, Emerson - Euro 2020
The last European Championship also ended with a Chelsea player hoisting the trophy into the air, as Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri helped Italy to overcome England – who also had a trio of Blues in their squad – in a penalty shootout in the final at Wembley.
In a tournament played a year later than planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the Azzurri who emerged triumphant, with Jorginho and Emerson adding Euros medals to the Champions League ones they had won with Chelsea in Porto just weeks earlier.
Jorginho was relieved after failing to convert his kick in the shootout, but there was no doubting his importance to the victory after scoring the winning penalty in the semi-final against Spain.
Mata, Torres - Euro 2012
Another Euros and Champions League double was completed in 2012, when Spanish duo Juan Mata and Fernando Torres followed up Chelsea’s first European triumph with La Roja’s second in a row.
They both played their part in that Euro 2012 final victory off the bench too. First Torres slotted in from Xavi’s through-ball and then he selflessly teed up Mata to get a goal of his own late on, completing a comprehensive 4-0 thrashing of Italy.
That goal and assist also secured Torres the competition’s Golden Boot award, completing an incredible couple of months for him and Chelsea’s 2012 Player of the Year Mata.
Desailly, Deschamps, Leboeuf - Euro 2000
Chelsea’s first Euros winners came nearly a quarter of a century ago, and arrived in a three as French trio Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps and Frank Leboeuf helped their nation defeat Italy 2-1 in extra-time in Rotterdam.
All three had been in the starting line-up when the Blues won that year’s FA Cup final, and Desailly and Deschamps did so again in the Euros decider, with the latter captaining his country to glory.
He did so in dramatic style, too. Italy we leading late into the game before France’s injury-time equaliser, followed by a golden goal winner not long before the end of the first half in extra-time.
