Marc Cucurella has explained why he enjoyed celebrating with the Chelsea supporters after Saturday’s win over Leicester City so much, and pointed to Enzo Fernandez’s match-winning performance as an example of this Blues’ team spirit.

The Spaniard continued his excellent form with another impressive showing in our 2-1 win over Leicester, providing the inviting cross which led to the winning goal, after Nicolas Jackson’s initial effort was well saved and Fernandez headed in the rebound.

When the three points were secured at the final whistle, following a difficult last couple of minutes after Leicester pulled a goal back with an added-time penalty, Cucurella was among the players seen enjoying some wholehearted celebrations with the travelling Chelsea supporters inside the King Power Stadium.

It was just one more sign of the bond he has now formed with the Blues fans, as he played conductor during a rendition of the now familiar song referencing his love of Spain’s national dish and the size of his hair.

‘The fans were amazing, we are in a good way and we need to keep going,’ the left-back reflected afterwards.

‘I think it’s very special to have that relationship with them. When the fans sing my song, it’s very special. I work hard so that I can have these moments with them. The fans believe in me, so I’m very happy.

‘All the team is happy to have this relationship with the fans. We know how it was difficult after some moments in the past, we have come through tough times in this club, but now we are in a good way we need to keep going and not relax, because this league is very tough.’

For all the appreciation for Cucurella’s role in Saturday’s win, it was Fernandez who was named Man of the Match by both the Premier League and the Chelsea supporters.

It came after he got the assist for Jackson’s opening goal before the roles were reversed for the Argentinian midfielder to score the winner.

Given that Fernandez had not previously started a Premier League match since the draw with Nottingham Forest in early October, Cucurella believes the fact he returned to the starting XI as captain and played such a decisive role demonstrates the mentality within the squad perfectly.

‘I’m really happy for him,’ began Cucurella. ‘We are close friends and I think he deserves it. He’s a top professional and he’s had a few games when he didn’t start, but he worked hard and he deserved this game. He played really well and this is football.

‘Sometimes you can start on the pitch and sometimes you need to start on the bench, but we are a team, we know what our objectives are and we need to keep going and pushing because if we push we have the talent.

‘The manager always decides who is in the team for the best way to plan the game, it doesn’t matter who plays. I know it’s difficult, I stayed two games on the bench before Arsenal, but this is part of the game. We know we have a lot of games, all the players believe we are important.

‘Maybe now I play, and then we have some weeks I don’t play, but we are a team. We know what we need to do and our responsibility and we want to stay in the best place, finish in the top four and make sure next season we play in the Champions League.’

It is that objective which is at the centre of the defender’s focus. The Blues currently sit third in the Premier League table, edging ahead of Arsenal on goals scored, but he knows there is a lot of hard work to do between now and the end of the season if we want to stay there and finish in the top four.

‘We knew that if we won at Leicester we could put pressure on our rivals and we did. We showed that we are ready to compete for the top four,' Cucurella said.

‘In my opinion that is the target this season, but we know this league is tough. We came from a difficult year and now we need to trust the process. We know everything we want to do.

‘For sure we are here to win titles, but I think right now we are a bit far from the top teams. They have worked together with the same manager and ideas for a long time. We started a few months ago this season.

‘We want to compete with all of them for sure, but it’s difficult, you can’t change all that overnight. But we are in a good way, we need to be proud of ourselves and keep going and not relax, because we have the talent but we need the consistency to stay in these places.’
