Marc Cucurella produced his best Chelsea performance in his biggest Chelsea game yet, deservedly earning the official Player of the Match award.
The Spaniard returned to the side for the first time since the return leg in Germany three weeks prior, lining up on the left side of the back three in the absence of the ineligible Benoit Badiashile and injured Thiago Silva.
From the first whistle Cucurella was quickest to the ball time and again, both on the ground and in the air. It was his interceptions that set up good first-half chances for Joao Felix and Ben Chilwell, while defensively he was solid as a rock as we kept a dangerous Dortmund side at arm’s length.
In his analysis of the outcome, he pointed to the unity of the Blues squad in tricky times as key to last night’s success.
‘This win is for everyone,’ said Cucurella.
‘In the bad moments we stayed together. Inside the dressing room the relationship between us is very good. You could see we played together, we ran for everyone, we had a team.
‘This is very important because when the team wins it’s easy to stay together, but it’s in the difficult moments when you need to stay together. That is a real team.
‘We knew the game in the first leg we played good,’ added the 24-year-old.
‘Maybe we didn’t control the small details because they scored in a counter-attack, but the team played good and we created chances.
‘For us the second leg was one of the games of the season and we knew we needed to play together and put everything on the pitch. This is an important win for us.’
For Cucurella himself, the evening offered validation he belongs at the top level following a difficult start to life at Chelsea which Graham Potter has said has been affected by matters off the pitch.
‘It’s easy when things aren’t good to criticise the players, but we are humans,’ underlined Cucurella.
‘Maybe we have some problems in our personal lives. This is part of life, and sometimes people need to understand this.
‘But we need to stay calm, keep working hard, and when you have the opportunity, put everything on the pitch for the team.’
Marc certainly did that last night!
