Erin Cuthbert is ready to embrace the challenge of making a good impression on our new head coach Sonia Bompastor.
The upcoming 2024/25 season will see Bompastor take the reins of the women’s team after succeeding Emma Hayes, who led the Blues for 12 trophy-laden years.
It is a significant moment of change at the club, but one which is exciting as we begin a new era under the Frenchwoman who arrives at Chelsea with a remarkable record as a player and a manager.
One such person who is excited is Cuthbert. Having been at the club since 2017, it will be the first time, like many others in the squad, she has worked under a new Blues head coach.
‘It’s going to be like the first day back at school kind of vibes,’ said Cuthbert. ‘New manager, new staff and new players – I’m really looking forward to it.
‘I’ve been at Chelsea a long time and somehow I feel like it gets different every year, but I think this will be a big significant change. I’m really excited by change.
‘I’m one to challenge myself and see where I can get to under a new manager. It’s all about having a conversation, seeing where they see me in the team and what position they see me in the team. I’m really excited by those conversations because I don’t know where my limit is yet.’
The 25-year-old Scottish midfielder believes Bompastor is the right fit to lead a squad who have a winning mentality instilled in them.
During her time at the helm of Lyon, our new head coach won three league titles, three cups and the Champions League. And those achievements came after the countless domestic and European trophies she won as a player.
‘Her stats speak for themselves,’ added Cuthbert. ‘Her record as a player and a manager – she’s done it all.
‘She certainly comes to the club with a winning mentality and that’s the one thing we’ve had at Chelsea for so many years. Even in training every day, there is the winning mentality and it is so competitive. The score is kept on every positional game, the leaderboard goes up, the accountability is there – there is nowhere to hide!
‘I’m excited by Sonia coming in. I think she’ll bring a fresh energy and a new outlook to things. It has got to be welcomed.’
And with Bompastor known for the way she utilises her midfield, with herself playing in that position during her own playing career, Cuthbert is determined to show the new boss what she can offer from the get go.
‘Every single year there are new players who come in and you just have to be willing to see it as a challenge rather than a threat,’ said Cuthbert. ‘For me, it’s another opportunity to make sure I’m one of the first names on the team sheet.
‘I don’t want to be one that is passed by, but that is up to me. It is nobody else’s decision, but me.
‘Sonia likes energy and her midfield to dictate the game from what I saw at Lyon – they have top, top players in midfield. I’m going to have to be at the top of my game to be in Sonia’s team.’
