Erin Cuthbert was pleased to return to the scoresheet as the Scottish international helped Chelsea record a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Women’s Super League.

After Lauren James opened the scoring with an impressive 25-yard strike, Cuthbert doubled Chelsea’s advantage before the break with a spectacular volley. Sam Kerr rounded off the win in the second period to secure the Blues an important three points.

And after a disappointing defeat to Arsenal and a frustrating draw against Hacken in the UEFA Women's Champions League, Cuthbert was pleased to help her side return to winning ways.

‘It was a really dogged display,’ she said. 'They have had some good results, but I think it was a really professional performance given it was off the back of a defeat and a draw which we were really disappointed in.

‘I think everyone has tough periods in a season, it’s just how you manage it and you need to make sure it doesn’t go on and on.

'We needed to make sure we nip it in the bud, which we did, and we had a few honest conversations, as we always do whether we win or we lose. I think most of all we learned a lot from those games and today we moved the ball a lot quicker.’

Reflecting on her excellent strike, Cuthbert added: ‘I was just trying to keep my eye on the ball because it was dropping from quite a height.

‘It was important I kept my eye on it so it didn’t roll down my shin. I knew that if I had good contact with the ball I would have a good chance to score.’

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Sweden to face Hacken. It is the final game of the year and victory will ensure Chelsea head into 2024 top of the Women's Super League and top of the Champions League group.

‘It’s a success for us to be top of the league by Christmas,' said Cuthbert. 'Everyone from the outside can be quite narrow-minded. We’re top of the league by three points at Christmas; that’s something I would’ve taken at the start of the season.

‘It’s very promising and exciting for us, and we can now take this momentum because we are going to play a similar side in Hacken. They will sit in and make it really hard for us, we just need to make sure we’re on it on Wednesday.

‘Next year I want to win more trophies. I never get tired of winning trophies and a club like Chelsea demands that and expects that of you every day.

‘I love being challenged at the club and whenever anyone comes in I like helping the new players bed in, but most importantly we want to win trophies - that’s why I’m here.’
