Erin Cuthbert says she and her Chelsea Women team-mates are determined to build on their dominance of the domestic game even further by winning the lot in 2022/23 as we begin our defence of the Women’s Super League title this afternoon.
The Blues travel to Liverpool for our first game of the new season, with kick-off at Prenton Park at 5pm, as Emma Hayes’ side set their sights on a historic fourth-consecutive WSL title, having also added the Women’s FA Cup to seal a domestic Double last term.
Speaking ahead of that season opener against the Reds, Cuthbert makes it clear Chelsea are not satisfied with their haul of silverware yet as she considers her aims for the coming campaign.
‘As a footballer you want to win everything so domestically we want to dominate,’ she said. ‘We know it’s going to be hard, the league’s really competitive so we know it’s going to be tough.
‘We want our Continental Cup back. Manchester City borrowed it for a year but we’re ready to have it back now. And our aspiration’s to do better in Europe. We’re really disappointed with how we did in Europe last season so I think the target has to be aiming higher in Europe, for sure.’
To help reach those ambitious targets, the Scotland international is pleased to be going into our first match off the back of a promising pre-season, both collectively for the squad and personally, as well as welcoming some exciting new team-mates to Chelsea.
‘Pre-season was good. It felt quite long when the girls were away at the Euros. We had a bit of a smaller squad and then they came back and we didn’t have a lot of time before the first game of the season. But the team look ready, they’re firing on all cylinders.
‘All of our new additions have brought a different dynamic to the group which is quite nice, because we’ve got some quiet ones, we’ve got some outgoing ones. So they’ve really complemented the group we’ve got here very nicely and as the season goes on I’m really looking forward to getting to know them.
‘I think the main thing for me personally on an individual level was staying fit during pre-season. I knew that if I did that the fitness would come and it has done.’
However, despite being full of confidence for the new season, Cuthbert knows there’s no room for complacency against newly promoted opposition and highlighted their pace in particular as a threat we will need to be wary of in Liverpool.
‘They’re a relatively new team in the league so it’s hard to know what to expect from them, but I know they’ve got really fast wingers. They’ve got pace in the wide areas so they can really hurt us but I think they’re going to be compact, they’re going to be hard to beat.
‘It’s their first time back in the league again so they’re going to make it difficult for us. They’re going to try to do everything they can to cause an upset for us. So we just need to control our game and focus on what we’ve been doing in training.’
With the kick-off of Chelsea Women’s 2022/23 campaign creeping ever closer, Cuthbert finds it hard to hide her excitement to be back in action, especially in front of the Blues supporters who travel up to Liverpool and at Kingsmeadow during the rest of the season.
‘I can’t wait to see the fans,’ she added. ‘We can’t wait to see everyone again, hopefully we even have some new fans off the back of the Euros so we can build on our existing fanbase, who have been great for us.
‘Going forward we really need them and we ask them to be as loud as possible because it really does get us through. Everybody saw that on the last day of last season, how much they did push us. So we need that again this year as the league’s going to be even more competitive than it was.’
