One young fan’s wish came true when Chelsea Women hosted an unforgettable matchday experience for them and their family at our final home game of the season at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
On a gloriously sunny afternoon at our Kingston home, five-year-old Daisy and her family were present to witness the Blues record a 2-0 victory over Arsenal and take one step closer to claiming the Women’s Super League title.
Manager Emma Hayes spoke after the game about putting the most important things in life first, and Daisy’s story epitomises this message as she bravely battled Rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare form of cancer which forms in soft tissue.
Daisy was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma aged four and went through invasive chemotherapy and proton beam therapy, before going into remission in January this year and her latest MRI results show that she is still all clear.
Accompanied by their mum Nicola, Daisy and her two sisters Leyah and Billie were invited into the dressing room for an exclusive pre-match behind-the-scenes tour. The girls were given signed footballs to take home as souvenirs, but the best surprise was yet to come.
It was an emotional moment as Daisy was surprised with a video call from her favourite Blues player Millie Bright. The defender was on her way to the stadium to meet Daisy and her family in person, and the girls made their way to the players' entrance to welcome the squad on arrival.
After the final whistle, Daisy’s dreams became reality when she stepped onto the pitch alongside her hero. Bright gifted Daisy with a signed shirt, before spending time having photographs taken with the family to cap off a memorable day for everyone involved.
Daisy's mum Nicola reflected on an emotional afternoon for the family, saying: ‘All three girls had the best time after a difficult year for them all, especially Daisy. Everyone made the day so special for them.
'Even down to showing us little things in the changing rooms, going behind the scenes was priceless to see how much it meant to the girls. They're very lucky, it's a day none of us will forget.’
Daisy was delighted with the experience and described how she felt after being given the opportunity to meet her favourite Blues player: ‘Millie Bright is my friend now, this is the best day of my whole life!’
Eldest child Leyah, 11, added: ‘This is the best experience, seeing the changing rooms and being able to stand on the ground they've just played football on,’ and the other of the three sisters, nine-year-old Billie, commented: ‘I love that we met the players and then watched them play and win!’
Chelsea Foundation matchday wishes are an extension of our regular community days, in which we link up with a range of charities to arrange once-in-a-lifetime visits for supporters and their carers, giving them a well-deserved boost during difficult times for them and their families.
