Although Chelsea left it late to see off Crystal Palace on Wednesday, the Blues did make some club history in our last home game of 2023 as we extended our recent run of dominance against the Eagles.
Noni Madueke’s nerveless penalty in the 89th minute secured our 12th consecutive league win against Palace (a run of 13 if you include our FA Cup semi-final victory in 2022) which matched a club record for consecutive league wins against another team.
Chelsea first recorded a dozen consecutive league wins against West Bromwich Albion; a run which began with a 3-2 triumph in the old Second Division in April 1989 and continued with 11 straight Premier League victories from 2002 to 2011.
That impressive run surpassed a stretch of 11 straight Premier League wins against Sunderland from 2002 to 2010.
Here’s how the Blues made it 12 league wins on the trot against the south London side.
March 2018 – Chelsea 2-1 Palace
After a 2-1 loss at Selhurst Park the previous October, we began our current winning streak against the Eagles in the return game at Stamford Bridge as a precise strike by Willian and an own goal by Martin Kelly put us two goals up at half-time before ex-Blue Patrick van Aanholt got a late consolation for the visitors.
November 2018 – Chelsea 3-1 Palace
Alvaro Morata struck twice at the Bridge, opening the scoring after 32 minutes and restoring our lead in the 65th minute with a clinical left-footed strike after Eden Hazard’s free-kick had picked him out unmarked at the far post. His Spanish compatriot Pedro sealed the 3-1 win five minutes later when he met Marcos Alonso’s low cross with a first-time finish.
December 2018 – Palace 0-1 Chelsea
A hard-fought derby at Selhurst Park was decided by an excellent strike by N’Golo Kante who chested down David Luiz’s lofted pass over the top of the Palace defence before turning a low strike past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
November 2019 – Chelsea 2-0 Palace
Frank Lampard’s youthful side scored twice in the second half to secure the three points. Willian’s neat flick set up Tammy Abraham to give us the lead before Christian Pulisic netted his first goal at the Bridge 11 minutes from time.
July 2020 – Palace 2-3 Chelsea
Following the Covid-19 lockdown, Chelsea secured a crucial result at an empty Selhurst Park as goals from Olivier Giroud, Pulisic and Abraham gave us a 3-2 win which played a big part in helping us qualify for the Champions League the following season.
October 2020 – Chelsea 4-0 Palace
Ben Chilwell enjoyed a memorable Premier League debut for Chelsea, smashing in the opening goal early in the second half before crossing for Kurt Zouma to head in our second goal. A pair of late penalties by Jorginho sealed an emphatic 4-0 victory.
April 2021 – Palace 1-4 Chelsea
The Blues again bagged four goals when we visited south London the following April with two coming in the opening 10 minutes from Kai Havertz and Pulisic. Zouma added a third with a header on the half-hour mark before Pulisic got his second of the game late on to seal a comfortable win.
August 2021 – Chelsea 3-0 Palace
Playing in front of the first full crowd at Stamford Bridge for 18 months on the opening day of the 21/22 season, Thomas Tuchel’s side turned on the style for the fans. Marcos Alonso’s excellent free-kick and Pulisic’s close-range effort gave us a two-goal lead at half-time before Trevoh Chalobah marked his Premier League debut with a magnificent long-range effort just before the hour.
February 2022 – Palace 0-1 Chelsea
We extended our winning streak against Palace to nine games thanks to some late heroics by Hakim Ziyech at Selhurst. With the game goalless after 89 minutes, Alonso’s deep cross from the left found the Moroccan who volleyed the ball between the legs of Jack Butland for the decisive goal.
October 2022 – Palace 1-2 Chelsea
Named Palace’s Player of the Year while on loan in south London the previous season, Conor Gallagher came back to haunt his former side when he curled home a magnificent 90th minute winner to seal a come-from-behind victory.
January 2023 – Chelsea 1-0 Palace
The Blues edged a hard-fought encounter at the Bridge thanks to some excellent goalkeeping by Kepa Arrizabalaga and a lone goal by Havertz, who headed home a cross by Ziyech midway through the second half.
