Ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Legia Warsaw, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall speaks about his Stamford Bridge goal in the last round, his love of big European nights, and why he is confident about this competition…

It was in our last UEFA Conference League home fixture that Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made his biggest contribution in a Chelsea shirt yet.

Our last-16 tie against Copenhagen remained in the balance early in the second half. Chelsea led 2-1 on aggregate having narrowly triumphed in the Danish capital, but a goal for the visitors back at the Bridge would change everything.

Step forward Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder took matters into his own hands, dribbling past a couple of Copenhagen players before forcing his way past two more and into the box. The swept finish that followed was unerring, nestling in the bottom corner. It was a wonderful way to win a game, and just reward for a fine display from the midfielder, who will be hoping to have a similar impact when we meet Legia Warsaw tomorrow.

‘It is something that I practise pretty much every day,’ Dewsbury-Hall explained.

‘Not just that finish, but that finish is because I am quite a lot of the time on the left side, putting myself in positions where I’m going to be in a game.

‘It was quite funny, I’ve seen a clip of the goal and you can see, I don’t even look up. I don’t even look where the goal is. Because of that photogenic repetition you sort of know, and I’m thankful that it shows that when you keep working hard and keep trying to do the right things, it can come to fruition in an important game.

‘It was a nice feeling for it to go in and I’m glad that it helped us get the win.’

Two-thirds of Dewsbury-Hall’s minutes since arriving at Chelsea have come in the Conference League. It is a competition he also featured in while at Leicester, and he represented the Foxes in the Europa League, too.

For the 26-year-old, European nights under the lights remain a source of great enjoyment.

‘They give you a different feeling – it’s hard to explain,’ said Dewsbury-Hall.

‘The Premier League’s the Premier League. It’s amazing, it’s the best, but you have a little bit of a different feeling in Europe when you’re going away to these different cultures and the fans are completely different, they’re loud, and it’s just something in your body’s that’s like, "This isn’t like a Saturday at 3pm in the Premier League. This is a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday night and you’re away in Poland, or whatever".'

‘It just gives you a bit of that added incentive and you know not everyone plays in Europe, so it’s a pleasure to play in tournaments like this,' continued Dewsbury-Hall.

‘You have to make the most of it and you have to give a good account of yourself, because everyone’s watching these games, so if you do well then it stands you in good stead.'

Chelsea have won every game in the Conference League proper, starting with the 4-2 success over Gent back in October. That was a night in which Dewsbury-Hall opened his Chelsea account.

The midfielder, who was excellent in the away leg against Legia in Warsaw last week, has great hopes Chelsea can continue our positive European form and lift the Conference League next month.

‘There are a lot of reasons why I have that confidence,' he stated. 'One is that I know the quality of the team, and I know the quality of the squad. I know the quality that I can bring, so it’s not disrespect to the rest of the players [in the tournament]. It’s just the self-belief that we have in the group. We feel like if we are doing the right things, it’s hard for another team to stop us.

‘I think a lot of people would look at it and go, “Chelsea are the favourites now”. And that’s probably rightfully so. We’re playing well, so it’s just a job that we have to do. We can’t really listen to everyone else, but as long as we’re all aligned in the dressing room, then that’s the main thing.’

The next job comes tomorrow evening. You can expect Dewsbury-Hall to be at the forefront of things again.
