Axel Disasi has praised the atmosphere created by the travelling Chelsea supporters in his first London derby against Tottenham Hotspur and explained why Nicolas Jackson’s first goal was such an important moment mentally, for him and the team.

Chelsea made it three away wins in a row in the Premier League with a 4-1 victory at Tottenham and Axel Disasi has played every minute of those three games at the centre of our defence. Despite the eventual margin of our victory in north London last night, though, it was anything but straightforward.

There were a total of five disallowed goals and two red cards in an incident filled match, which was repeatedly halted for lengthy VAR reviews, resulting in a total of 21 added minutes being played across the two halves.

It was anything but an ordinary game, but that didn’t stop Axel from thoroughly enjoying the occasion and, of course, the win, in a sign that our performances are beginning to be rewarded with the points they deserve, something lacking in the early stages of the campaign.

‘I think it was a crazy game, especially in the first half,’ admitted Disasi. ‘The first half was a little bit strange because every time something happened the VAR was there checking. So we’re happy to win this game because we needed to get some points. We are very happy.

‘For me, it was my first London derby against Tottenham and the atmosphere was crazy, it was top. At the end, at the final whistle, the fans and the players were so happy, so it was good.

‘We know that the fans want us to win every game, especially in this moment because we don’t win so many games. But I think today, after this win, they are happy. We are happy also and now we have to take a rest and prepare for a big game again on Sunday.’

For many, Monday night's match seemed to hinge on a confusing period around 10 minutes before the half-time break, when Moises Caicedo’s stunning equaliser was ruled out for offside. A series of VAR reviews followed, checking three separate incidents, before the officials decided it was no goal, but issued a red card to Cristian Romero and a Chelsea penalty for the Spurs defenders' challenge on his Argentina international team-mate Enzo Fernandez.

Cole Palmer converted from the spot to send us in level with a one-man advantage, before Tottenham received another red in the second half, and we finally broke the dam as Nicolas Jackson found the net three times to seal our victory.

‘The coach said at half-time that we have to be patient, to keep the ball, and when we have the opportunities to score, take them. The second goal came a little bit late but at the end Nico scored a hat-trick. I’m happy also for him because he needed this and I hope that in the future he can score more goals like that.

‘We are a young group and a victory like this, in a big game like this, it will give us confidence for the future. So we have to take this and learn from this game, because I think we can do some things much better. But we must take the result and the confidence from this game, enjoy the win now, and let’s see what happens on Sunday against Manchester City.’

Although that key VAR talking point in the first half eventually went in Chelsea’s favour with a converted penalty and a red card, despite chalking off Caicedo’s original strike, the officials’ decisions didn’t always go our way. We had three goals ruled out in total and were called offside on seven occasions as we attempted to use our pace to punish Tottenham’s extremely high defensive line, especially in the second half.

That seemed to leave the players almost scared to celebrate when the ball hit the back of the net, waiting for the seemingly inevitable VAR review. Disasi explained the belief Jackson’s first goal provided, proving that we could successfully defeat Spurs’ offside trap, gave us the confidence to open the floodgates late on.

‘With the VAR it is always the same, whether we agree or do not agree. When the VAR decision goes against us we have to take off the frustration and keep the focus on our game, that’s it. Tonight chance was on our side and we are happy with this.

‘When we scored for 2-1 we saw that VAR was checking the goal and it was like: ‘not again’! But in the end Raheem was not offside and Nico scored. Then after that we saw that we were more confident to put the ball deep and we scored again and again, so we are happy.’
