Axel Disasi is crystal clear. There is only one goal for Chelsea in this season’s UEFA Conference League.

The defender is embarking on his maiden European adventure with the Blues. He has started each of our three games in UEFA’s newest competition to date, and will be expecting to add to that tally when we meet Panathinaikos in Athens on Thursday evening.

There is still a long road to navigate to reach the final in Wroclaw in late May, but Disasi is acutely aware of Chelsea’s record in continental competition. He knows what is expected.

‘We haven’t properly discussed or set any objectives so far, but as Chelsea representatives, and just being Chelsea, actually, it’s about going all the way,’ he stated.

‘Chelsea is renowned for going all the way in European competitions. Also, we know that if we win it, we would be the first ever club to win the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. That obviously drives us, and it’s clearly our ambition.

‘For a club like Chelsea, not playing European football last season was not normal. This season, we have the opportunity to shine on the European stage, and we’ll do everything we can to bring the club back where it belongs.’

Disasi has plenty of European experience to his name, having featured in Champions League qualifiers and reached the knockouts in two Europa League campaigns with Monaco.

He is very happy to be back on the European stage, which offers him the opportunity to discover new venues and countries, as well as sample different atmospheres. He can expect a lively one in the Greek capital on Thursday, with a huge sell-out crowd expected at the Olympic Stadium.

The Blues are looking to build on our matchday one victory against Gent, in which captain Disasi provided a superb assist for Pedro Neto just after the interval. He clipped a ball over the Buffalos’ backline which the Portuguese latched on to before blasting home, and immediately turning to celebrate with Disasi.

‘Throughout the first half, he was asking me for these types of passes,’ explained Disasi.

‘However, I didn’t find that he was making the right run or had enough space. We discussed that at half-time, and I told him, 'I’ll do whatever you want me to do on my first ball'.

‘So, after making the first touch, I saw that his run was sharper than in the first half and I lofted the ball to him. Then, his finish was super.

‘The goal came just seconds after the second half kicked off. You could really tell by his celebration that we’d just discussed that less than five minutes before. That’s why he immediately ran towards me, and he was extremely happy. He’s a nice guy, and I was happy for him, too.’

Now, Disasi is intent on making further positive contributions to keep Chelsea shining in Europe.
