As we continue our series reviewing each Chelsea player’s season just gone, Christian Pulisic is next in the spotlight...
A start hampered by injury
Pulisic got his 2021/22 season off to a great start when he netted in the opening 45 minutes of the season against Crystal Palace, to extend his hot streak against the Eagles to five goals in five games.
Though that was as good as it got for Christian at club level for a few months, after he returned from September’s international break with an ankle injury he sustained in USA’s win over Honduras.
It was not until November when the USA international got his season back up and running again, when he was introduced with 16 minutes remaining in the 1-0 victory over Malmo in the Champions League. His next goal for the Blues came in our 3-0 victory over Leicester in mid to late November, when he tapped in Hakim Ziyech’s cross.
Stepping up for his country
Pulisic netted his first-ever USA hat-trick in a 5-1 victory against Panama in March, a trio of strikes which all but ensured their qualification to the 2022 World Cup. Christian and his USA team-mates will face off with England, Wales and Iran in Group B in Qatar.
A thorn in Lille’s side
Pulisic scored home and away against French side Lille in this season’s Champions League, the first time he has netted in both fixtures against the same opponent since 2019/20 against Crystal Palace.
His goal in the first leg of the tie doubled our advantage, after he finished off an incredible piece of play from N’Golo Kante.
Yet his goal in the reverse fixture three weeks later rendered more significance for the American personally, as Christian broke the record for the number of Champions League goals scored by an American, five of which have come at Chelsea.
His 100th Blues appearance in all competitions for the club came in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in February.
