Vice-captain Jorginho is next up in our player-by-player season reviews, and it was another strong campaign from the Italian who took his form with the Azzurri from last summer’s European Championship success into his club season with the Blues…
The midfielder had a summer to remember heading into the 2021/22 campaign, winning Euro 2020 a few months after his Champions League triumph with Chelsea. His performances were exemplary too, covering the most ground (86.6km) of any player at Euro 2020, while making the most interceptions (25) at a European Championship tournament since Opta started collecting data.
His fluid passing and constant shuffling in midfield, not to mention his unerring goals from the penalty spot in his distinctive style, has become an important cog in Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea team. Jorginho featured 47 times for the club across the season, the most of any of our recognised central midfielders.
There are only three players in the current squad who have appeared in a Chelsea shirt more times than Jorginho – who has 188 appearances to his name ahead of 2022/23.
Bronze in the Ballon d’Or!
Jorginho was awarded third place in the vote for the much-coveted Ballon d’Or award back in November. The Italian narrowly missed out on the top prize to Lionel Messi, with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski claiming second. It is the best performance for a Chelsea player at the awards since Frank Lampard was runner-up in 2005.
Breaking records became a habit
Back in October, against Malmo at home, Jorginho became the first Chelsea player to score two penalties in the same match on three sperate occasions, with the other two coming against Ajax and Crystal Palace.
He then achieved the same feat against Leeds United and Aston Villa in the month of December, meaning he has scored double penalties in five separate matches for the club.
Later on that month, in our final October outing, Jorginho became the first player in Premier League history to have 10 consecutive goals in the competition come from the penalty spot, when he netted in our 3-0 victory against Newcastle United.
Three more spot-kicks followed before the turn of the calendar year, ensuring Jorginho scored 10 Premier League penalties in 2021, an annual record in the competition, eclipsing Steven Gerrard’s nine.
All nine of the midfielder’s Chelsea goals in 2021/22 came from 12 yards. His only penalty miss came against West Ham in April, though it did not cost the Blues three points as we eventually scored to beat the Hammers 1-0. Afterwards, head coach Thomas Tuchel refused to blame his player for not changing his technique.
Stepping up in Azpi’s absence
Jorginho captained Chelsea in 15 of our 63 matches in 2021/22, four of these coming in consecutive matches in the latter months of 2021, in which club captain Cesar Azpilicueta was named on the bench. The Blues were unbeaten across this four-game stretch.
