Four young Chelsea players featured as England were defeated 2-1 by Uzbekistan in the last 32 of the Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia.
Ishe Samuels-Smith, Josh Acheampong and Reiss Denny all started for the Young Lions. Denny was withdrawn at half-time, and Harrison Murray-Campbell entered the fray late on for Samuels-Smith.
Ted Curd and Michael Golding remained unused substitutes on a desperately frustrating evening in Jakarta, in a game England had control of for vast swathes, but still ended up exiting the tournament.
Uzbekistan took the lead inside four minutes when Amirbek Saidov forced a close-range header over the line after England keeper Tommy Setford saved the initial shot.
Denny had England’s first attempt of note with a well-struck daisycutter held by the Uzbekistani keeper. The Young Lions were dominating possession and territory but finding it tough to break down the massed ranks of blue shirts until Joel Ndala was released and finished coolly one-on-one with 35 minutes played.
England’s dominance continued in the second half, but good chances remained elusive, and Uzbekistan struck next when Lazizbek Mirzaev whipped a fantastic free-kick into the top corner. It was their third shot on target. England had half-an-hour to find an equaliser.
Ndala tried to respond but curled a beautiful effort against the crossbar with Muhammadyusuf Sobirov well beaten. When England did hit the target, they found Sobirov in fantastic form, making nine saves in total. Thirteen minutes of stoppage elapsed in which Uzbekistan hung on to secure a famous victory.
