Enzo Maresca has confirmed the injury suffered at Fulham by Malo Gusto is not a long-term issue, although the right-back won’t be in contention to face Everton this weekend.
The Blues welcome the Toffees to Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime, looking to follow up our dramatic win over Fulham with another three points in our chase for a top-five finish.
Gusto went off at Craven Cottage in the second half, having earlier replaced Reece James at half-time. While the muscle injury will keep the Frenchman out of this weekend’s clash with David Moyes’ side, Maresca did confirm at his pre-match conference that he doesn’t expect Gusto to be out for long and that the right-back is working outside on the grass already.
Meanwhile, Maresca also stated that he has no other fresh injury concerns to contend with and that striker Marc Guiu is progressing well in his recovery.
‘Malo is injured but it does not look like an important injury,’ our Italian head coach told the gathered media at Cobham.
‘He is running and doing things outside, but he won't be available for tomorrow’s game.
‘Outside of that, Marc Guiu is still out, Aaron Anselmino is still out but the rest are still fit. Hopefully Marc can be back in one or two weeks.'
When asked more about Guiu, Maresca added: ‘Marc is doing well and he is getting close [to a return to action]. Maybe another one or two weeks and then we hope he will be back to help us with the final part of the season.’
Elsewhere, Maresca has confirmed Romeo Lavia – back in the matchday squad of late following injury – is again fine to be part of the side tomorrow and explained how the midfielder is being managed.
‘Romeo is doing well - he was on the bench against Fulham,’ added Enzo. ‘Also, he was on the bench in other games recently. He’s back, he’s training with us.
‘With Romeo, we will try the same things that we are doing with Reece James. It is important that we use them carefully, going step by step and taking things slowly. Reece is doing well, he is playing two games every few days now and is holding up well across games in the Conference League and the Premier League. We will try to do the same with Romeo.’
The sixth-place Blues go into tomorrow's clash with Everton knowing victory would see us finish the weekend in the Champions League qualification places, with at least five spots up for grabs this season and three of the teams around us - Aston Villa (7th), Nottingham Forest (4th) and Manchester City (3rd) - all in FA Cup semi-final action.
We enjoy an excellent home record against Everton - having not lost to the Toffees at Stamford Bridge in the top flight in 29 matches, a run which stretches back to 1994 and is a club record.
However, the Merseysiders held us to a 0-0 draw in our final trip to Goodison Park just before Christmas and David Moyes have since guided them away from the threat of relegation and up into 13th place, above the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Saturday’s clash also sees Maresca clock up 50 games in charge of the Blues, since joining from Leicester in the summer. So how does our head coach reflect on the experience so far?
‘It’s been a good experience and I’m very happy,’ Maresca explained. ‘I have learned many things here.
‘Playing in many competitions and playing every three days, it’s a journey in terms of learning things. We have had some good moments, some bad moments but the club has a vision and we are just at the beginning of that vision.’
