Ahead of our Premier League clash at West Ham United, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca discussed the unseen work undertaken on the training pitches at Cobham, with the development of Josh Acheampong and Mykhailo Mudryk highlighted. the development work undertaken on the training pitches at Cobham,

With Maresca's experience including a successful spell in the Manchester City academy, where he worked and won silverware with the likes of Cole Palmer, the Italian knows a thing or two about helping players reach their potential.

And looking at the current group of players under his charge at Chelsea, Maresca sees plenty of talent to tap into, too.

One such player is young defender Acheampong. He has predominantly featured for our Under-21s this season but travelled with the senior squad to the USA in pre-season, was on the bench away to Servette in the UEFA Conference League, and made his men's debut in last season's Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Maresca believes big things could be ahead for Acheampong but has highlighted the work that must be done – on and off the pitch – by the 18-year-old Academy graduate to fulfil his undoubted potential.

‘I really like Josh,' said Maresca during his pre-match press conference. 'For me, potentially, he can be a top player, a top defender in the future.

‘With young players, I have a lot of experience and I like to moderate them a little bit because today young players can change very quickly.

‘They can quickly think they are so good or so bad, so you need to moderate a little bit the way that they join us [in the first team].’

Yet no player is too old to improve and add new strings to their bow. That is something Maresca appreciates and he explained how individual work at Cobham can help every player develop further.

In this respect, the Blues boss highlighted the work being done with Mudryk, who is still relatively early in his career at 23 years old. The Ukraine international has been eased into the action during the early stages of his second full campaign in English football.

Maresca said: ‘Training sessions are the only way to improve players and we try to improve all of them every day, with some of them doing extra sessions at the end.

‘At this moment, Misha is one of them. At this moment, he isn’t playing, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to play in the future.’
